"RE-INVENT'S SOUL MUSIC" - Save Our Soul (review)
14 MP3 Songs
URBAN/R&B: Soul, BLUES: Rhythm & Blues
Details:
9/21/06
If you love the sounds of Stax, Detroit, and Philly, you might want to give some attention to this new CD.
Soul Project features eight guest vocalists who deliver 14 tracks of dynamic new soul, and in the process re-centers soul music on it's timeless heritage.
"Have they hired the Memphis Horns to play on this project? How many hours have they listened to the soul music that came from Detroit or Philadelphia? All these questions will go through your mind when you hear the kind of blues and soul that these musicians bring...the music is refreshing, sparkling...The opening song "Snake In The Bag" sounds like a mix of Robert Cray and Booker T,. & the MG's. In "Been In The Storm Too Long" it feels like Smokey Robinson has a hold on (vocalist) Sonja Grier...these artists have re-invented soul music." (Review: Save Our Soul internet soul radio).
There is a lot going on with this CD - not only from the number of tracks gaining attention, but also from a conceptual and production standpoint. Songs such as "Snake In The Bag" and "Corporate Man" suggest that Stax might still be operating underground somewhere, while "Been In The Storm Too Long" and "Lockdown" are straight out of the Funk Bros. playbook. Sonja Grier's "Right Here, Right Now" (already a UK hit), and Maria Howell's "Somethin' You Got" will dial you straight into Philly's Sigma Sound. New mainstream soul, indeed.
"Soul Project: Reconnection" is a product of Spirit Records, Charlotte, NC USA
