Details:
S.O.S. What is it? A cry for help? A beacon? An invitation? An accusation? An idea? A hope? A need? A truth? Even to the members of this emerging Edmonton-based band, the S.O.S. project is a kaleidoscopic clash of meanings, purposes, visions, and influences. Did someone say influences? Only about a billion of them, ranging from The Tea Party to Rush to Dream Theater to Primus to Jane's Addiction to Interpol to Creed to Megadeth to Soundgarden to Incubus to Pantera to Radiohead to Fishbone to OLP to Rage Against the Machine to Metallica to The Constantines to Iron Maiden to King's X to Massive Attack to U2 to The Flecktones to Tool to Steve Vai to Hunter S. Thompson.

So, what do they finally sound like? Well, for lack of a more specific term, the band has dubbed their sound, "Universal Rock". Not overtly experimental or dissonant, S.O.S. explores the existing musical landscape, pulling moments, ideas, and feelings from multiple genres into their songs as opportunities arise. The songs for the new EP were chosen for their own diversity, infusing an underlying riff-laden rock style with elements of metal, folk, electronic, funk, etc., often all in the same song. Structurally, listeners can expect aggressive, rock choruses laced with creative introductions, melodic and stylistic tangents, and a wide range of vocal textures. Lyrically, listeners may be surprised to hear that, while Greg Matheos' vocals are often delivered with furious intensity, the lyrics reflect the band's commitment to the positive. These are songs about savouring the moment, living up to our own expectations, shrugging off the mistakes of the past, and seizing the opportunities of the future. The philosophy of this band is to demand more out of life and to choose to make it happen. As Matheos comments about their song, "No One", "What if I had to confront my own past dreams? What might they say to me? Would I feel like I'm on my way or like I'm waiting for something? And if I'm waiting, what the hell am I waiting for?"
