Details:
Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen are two of folk music's most respected writers and performers. As the Boston Globe has noted, "She is one of the finest pure ballad singers in folk today, a wondrously clear and honest vocalist. He is a prolific songwriter who achieved respected tenure in the tough climes of the Los Angeles recording industry." Together, they are known for tight harmonies, intricate guitar and concertina arrangements, and varied material: original songs (Steve is author of the classic Darcy Farrow), traditional ballads and tunes, and songs penned by other contemporary writers. In a review of one of their albums, British Folk Roots magazine commented "Still just about the classiest duo around, with more of their sublime traditional and contemporary folk...Lovely music."

On their new album Being There (2006), Steve and Cindy have pulled together a varied group of songs, from Steve's Hurricane (about the 1935 storm that hit the Florida Keys) to Cindy's setting of a Rudyard Kipling poem, The Road Through the Woods. They pay homage to their home state with Steve's song The Vermont Waltz and take note of the influence from Quebec with the traditional song J'Entends le Moulin. Humor sneaks in with a couple of songs penned by Lou & Peter Berryman and Mr. O'Reilly, Steve's song based on a famous joke. The album also includes a couple of sets of tunes on the English concertina, and songs written by Brian Cutean, Trevor Mills and Jack Williams. The album was mastered by Scott Petito, who also plays acoustic bass, and features backup by Nathaniel Parke (cello), Pete Sutherland (piano, fiddle), Jennifer Weeks (oboe), and Jack Williams (guitar).
