STORM GORDON - future-soul songstress & her band . Storm Gordon's debut headlining gig at Torontoâs Drake Underground came during Toronto's Film Festival in September 2004. Besides the two Scots - Storm, & her songwriting partner David Galbraith (guitar/keys) - her new band features 3 Torontonian musicians : Reggae sax & flute player, Isax (Dennis Brown/Abyssinians/Leroy Sibbles); and the funk & dance-influenced rhythm section of Jamaican R&B bassist Roger Williams (formerly with Ivana Santilli/ the Arsenals), alongside Italian/Canadian drummer Vince Maccarone (the Sidemen). Storm Gordon, the singer, grew up on the Isle of Arran, off the west of Scotland - the daughter of an artist-mother (whose father & grandfather were also artists) and a jazz musician-father, with whom she has had little contact as a child. Storm left home at 16 for what she hoped would be the bright lights of Brussels, and LA / Orange County, California. Singing & songwriting were always her overriding passions, but along the way she has worked as a model for a London fashion agent, in the wig-room of Scottish Opera, & studied Classics, Art History & Archaeology at Glasgow University (which she left after three years, to work with Galbraith). Gordon & Galbraith joined forces after discovering a shared passion for 70âs soul singers such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Al Green & Curtis Mayfield, as well as for the early 90âs Detroit Techno & European electronic music. Throughout this time Gordon frequently performed live as a jazz singer (singing Gershwin, Johnny Mercer & Cole Porter songs), as well as with a wide variety of artists including Glasgowâs Teddy deVere 20âs Band & Glasgow indie-band Babel. She also wrote the Edinburgh Fringe musical comedy âSo Far Soy Sauceâ for the harmony vocal group sheâd formed with her younger sister, the Jacuzzi Sisters. Turkish-born songwriting-partner David Galbraith, meanwhile, was a guitarist/songwriter in Edinburghâs early-90âs ambient dance-act, Botany 5(on Virgin Records), having also worked as an instrumental composer for an Edinburgh-based dance company. Between leaving Botany 5 and meeting Gordon, he worked as a record producer & TV composer, writing the theme music for PBS/Time Life's WW2 & Vietnam documentary seriesâ. It was partly the success of these that originally enabled Gordon & Galbraith to start their own independent Wonderlust label, leading to their first UK album releases in 2001 â âRadio Wonderlust Vol. 1â & âSongs for Birdmanâ, the first of which also featured the debut recordings by fellow-artists & musical collaborators Dravidian and Drongo. The new Storm Gordon album âSomeone to Dance Withâ is due to be released in Europe & the UK by the independent Hamburg-based label Hypertension in early 2006.
