Details:
Steve Martel is a singer songwriter/guitarist who was born and reared in Baltimore, MD He subsequently cut his musical teeth in the fertile alternative music scene that flourished in the Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and Durham area of North Carolina area in the late 80's and 90's. While in NC , he worked with artists Jerry Kee, Thomas Wilson, and Don Fraser on various musical incarnations. He also played and collaborated on a number of projects at Jerry's revered Duckee Studios during that time ( and has since).
After re-anchoring himself back home in Crabtown he began writing songs in earnest as a solo artist. Beside his recent release 'Sure Heart' , he also wrote and produced two previous albums titled 'Skin and Bone' and 'Soul flour.' Steve has also been a major collaborator on numerous musical endeavors in his hometown ranging from playing in local rock and folk bands, to producing and writing school musicals and performing in an off-Broadway musical in NYC. As an educator he has taught history and music in dyslexic and traditional schools alike, In 2000, Steve beat Jack Black to the punch by starting a rock and roll camp for burgeoning adolescent rock and rollers. The Rock Shop camp in Baltimore focuses on helping young songwriters and performers craft their skills and talents while having a rocking ball. Look for the Rock Shop 2005 CD on CD Baby soon to get a taste of how refreshing and exciting adolescent rock is!
'Sure Heart' is Steve's latest and surely finest CD to date. The range of styles and influences that you will encounter is broad yet accessible and recognizable. (Martel dubs his musical style 'AMERICAN MUTT'). On 'Sure Heart', he collaborates with Jerry Kee in Chapel Hill, Jim Doherty ( formerly with Willie Alexander of Beantown), Linda Nelson, Don New, and a host of other musical friends. The lyrical content of the album takes the listener on a personal journey through the joyous, humorous, and at times unflinchingly painful aspects of growing up and coming to: themes of homecoming, spiritual recovery, history and destiny, true love, the death of new born, the joy of a son, perseverance,, city life, and the human side of Jesus. The album's lone cover is a raucous homage to Bobby D. in the form of a sterling rendition of 'It tales a lot to laugh and a train to cry.' Serve it up see where it takes you. There is a sure-footedness to the songs -- a sure-hearted response to life and an affirmation of our place in it. Amen.
