INTRODUCING
AL STELK
Folk artist, Al Stelk was born in Danville, Illinois on September 17, 1954 and moved to Kankakee in 1962, where he received his first guitar in the 7th grade. He started guitar lessons, but after three practice sessions trying to play right handed, he quit the lessons and reversed the strings to play left handed. Music instantly became his passion as well as his release. Known by his family and friends as Al John, he has written songs and musical tributes ever since.
Lifeâs travels landed Al John in Crawfordsville, Indiana where he fell in love with Fawnda, his wife of thirty years. Al John has written deeply moving lyrics, being primarily influenced by James Taylor, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and Cat Stevens. As with most creative artists, Al Johnâs music mimics his life and his milieu. The intimacy of his spirit rings with every note and chord.
His songwriting spans all emotions from the trials of dating (One More Time), to being married (Fawndaâs Song), to having children (Sammy Blue), to having your child in a coma (Song for Michael and Drew), and finding peace through God (My Way Home).
Fate united Al John with a true musical genius, Frayne Lewis, who was instrumental in producing a compilation of Alâs poetic harmonies. Together with Mat Prock, engineer extraordinaire, Al John recorded his first album in February 2006 at Chicago Recording Company, Studio 4 during a magical week that combined some of the finest background talent in the music industry.
Al is deeply enriched by the experience and wishes to thank Maurice Fitzgerald on bass guitar, Calvin Rodgers on drums, Alejo Poveda on percussion, Opal Staples, lead female vocalist, Katherine Hughes on violin, with warm and special thanks to female vocalist, Audrey Stelk, Alâs second daughter.
Al Johnâs musical genre may be defined as folk, but the acoustical harmonies transcend other musical genres as well. âAlâs music is subtle yet distinctive and powerful. The world needs this type of music. If you listen to a song and it makes you pause for a moment that means it has moved you to your core being. Alâs music has that unique and special quality.â - Frayne Lewis
âAfter listening to Alâs music it is obvious that he is gifted. Al is able to touch people with his voiceâ â Ramsey Lewis
