BLUES: Guitar Blues, BLUES: Electric Blues
Details:
The Stone Crazy Blues Band, Northwest based blues trio, was formed in early 2004 by guitarist Chris Morda, bassist Forrest Giberson, and drummer Lorne Watson. The band's members all have diverse backgrounds, Chris has an Ethnomusicology Degree, Forrest has bachelor of music degree in Studio Music and Jazz with specialization in performance, music theory, music history and composition, and Lorne graduated with a Bachelors of Music Education and Percussion Performance. All three are currently private, as well as group, music instructors and have a wide range of performance experience.
On the band's debut cd, âBarnyard Boogieâ the bands diverse background is showcased on classic , modern, as well as original blues. Classic blues dating back to the 1930's such as Blind Willie Johnson's "Motherless Children" , Willie Dixons 's "Little Red Rooster" , and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGheeâs âTrouble In Mindâ reflect the bands innovative approach to blues classics featuring Chris on lap slide guitar. Sonny Boy Williamonâs electric blues classic from the 1950âs âHelp Meâ features standard guitar and showcases the influence of white blues great Johnny Winterâs influence on Chrisâs playing.
The Band focuses on originals on âThe Freezeâ an instrumental tribute to the âIceManâ Albert Collins (whom Chrisâs primary guitar teacher as a youngster, Robert Noll, toured with in the early 80âs,) the band stretches out with special guest on Hammond Organ, Joe Doria, one of the most highly sought out Organ players in the Northwest. Joe also lends his talents on another instrumental, Think Of You, which breaks the blues tradition in harmonic structure and features a beautiful meditatively melodic sentiment which has proven to be a fan favorite at the bandsâ performances in the greater Puget Sound area. A sense of humor is showcased on the one of the bands original vocal numbers, 1/2 Steppin Chicken, featuring drummer Lorne Watson on vocals. Lorne also adds a light hearted touch to the bands experiment in microtonal music on âWorkin Bluesâ, this song features the 12 Tone Ultra Plus Guitar with 29 notes per octave, juxtaposing the serious musical approach of minimalism and the overtone series with his casual vocal delivery. The bands range stands out on a number of other instrumentals as well. "Introspectâ inluenced by East Indian Music, which once again features Chris on lap slide guitar, also features an extended drum solo. âSlow Downâ and the title track of the cd Barnyard Boogieâ are instrumental slide guitar workouts focusing once again on the classic blues sound as well as a country influence.
