The StunDarts blend rich melodic vocals over crunched-out distorted guitars. Their rock debut "Remember the Day" mixes hand-off harmonies with discord reminiscent of the straightforward sound of bands like The Pixies and Weezer, yet with instrumental elements best compared to the likes of Fugazi and SwerveDriver. While earlier collaborations between Alex Keith and Thad Phillips have yielded a rich trove of throwback hip-hop and urban electronic beats and hooking melodies, this latest effort sees the core duo back with the same earnest song-writing, albeit with a new groove that is entirely their own.
It is difficult to compare originality so why try too hard to push comparisons, but one can begin to trace some of their alternative musical genealogy, from the attitude of heavier crunching rockers such as The Clash or The Strokes yet with a more reflective mode that bears the influence of more cerebral bands such as Nada Surf or The Verve.
The Darts hit their stride with tunes like "Chemical Enhancements," with it's driving beat and the poignant threat of it's lyrics or the lingering echos of "Remember the Day," the dual tracks of the catchy bridge and chorus that stays with the listener for days and days.
Who are the StunDarts aiming for? Intelligent college alt-listeners and adults who want fun, poppy rock with verve and most importantly, a substance that lasts long after the spinning of the CD ceases.
