You know him as the lead singer for both the Dazz Band and Kool & the Gang. Skip Martinâs first smooth jazz CD 'Miles High' is filled with hip, cool, funky, smooth jazz grooves. Ronnie Laws, Wayman Tisdale, Ricky Lawson, Al McKay & Bruce Conte feature.
13 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Smooth Jazz, URBAN/R&B: Funk
Details:
The idea of Skip Martinâs first solo jazz project was pure and simple â âit was just timeâ.
With 26 album releases as lead vocalist with Dazz Band, Kool & the Gang and his own solo projects, Skip wanted to record a project where he did his âsingingâ through his trumpet. âIâve recorded with both groups in the horn section but never as a solo instrumentâ stated Skip.
The result is âMiles Highâ filled with hip, cool, funky, smooth jazz grooves. âYouâll definitely come away ... with ... a sense of what Miles might be doing musically if he were still with us.â(Scott OâBrien for smoothjazz.com).
âAre You Readyâ the debut single, with Skip on trumpet and vocals, Wayman Tisdale on bass guitar and Ricky Lawson on drums is â...a laid back blend of classic styles. If Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd were in the same band they would open their set with this tune...â (Gene
Harris, Jr., MBA and Cat Lee for GrooveDoctorsRadio.com).
Ronnie Laws appears on sax on the âSmooth Sailingâ track in a beautiful trumpet and sax duet â ranging from sultry grooves to profound narratives.
âMiles Highâ, the title cut, a tribute to Miles Davis written the night Miles died, clearly shows an insightful range of diverse influences from the modern jazz era known as the Miles Years. â... jazz that can appeal to the novice and seasoned listener...â (Enorman for soulpatrol.
netradio)
Al McKay of Earth, Wind & Fire comes through on guitar with the track âOld School Rulesâ and Bruce Conte of Tower Power also on guitar is featured on âCareless Whisperâ.
The album includes the first recordings of spoken word poet Bronze Paragon on the tracks âAre You Readyâ (Spoken Word) and âAproposâ (Spoken Word) â which just make you sit up and listen.
âIâm very excited about this projectâ admits Skip Martin. âIt took 2 years in the making with a few starts and stops but the journey was well worth the timeâ.
