Details:
Talk about a slow courtship. Alex Gibson and Tripp Lanier met in 1994, but didn't begin collaborating musically until 2001 when Alex produced Tripp's hard rock band, Hank Madison. The two forged a camaraderie that pushed each other's creativity to the forefront.
Alex explains, "When writing with another person, there is a period where you get to know the vulnerabilities of the other...it's a delicate balance because you want a safe environment to share your ideas AND a co-creator to push your limits - that's where the best stuff comes from." Tripp adds, "we've reached a productive point in our process because there's no more Mr. Nice Guy. It's all about being the best people and artists we can be. Frankly we won't settle for less from one another."
This is easier said than done, as Alex and Tripp live on opposite coasts - Alex in Los Angeles, CA and Tripp in Tallahassee, Florida. Both members play multiple instruments - Tripp handles most of the vocals, bass, and guitar, while Alex specializes in drums and piano, adding anything else necessary (from accordian to ukulele). Through file sharing and Apple's iSight webcam technology they're able to write on their own and then add to each other's ideas.
Since the Hank Madison album, they've found inspiration in traveling around the country and abroad. "Our experience in different cultures and environments definitely finds it's way into our songs. Whether it's roaming around Venice or getting pounded by big surf in Hawaii we've learned that it pays to be flexible and patient...that's especially true when it comes to making music," Tripp gabs.
What this means to listeners is that the music of Screaming Witness is dynamic, uncluttered, and full of wanderlust. It is melodic pop and rock that breathes, bleeds and borrows from many genres. Tripp adds, "we've learned that no one genre is big enough for all of our ideas."
Currently the boys are building a live band to promote their debut. It seems the travels continue for Screaming Witness, and they've never been more ready.
