A Word on Grace...
Grace is a word that I grew up hearing often around home and church. But the first time that I really experienced grace personally, was at a very low point in my life after high school. I found myself asking the hard questions of life ..."Why am I here; What is my Purpose". I was also reaping the consequences of some bad decisions I had made years previously. The lower I sank, the more I began to realize how hopelessly lost I was without God and His grace,. The reality of my sin was dark and ugly compared to God's holiness and goodness. Even my self-righteousness was as "filthy rags" in God's eyes. My guilt was an inescapable reality, and my need for forgiveness and restoration undeniable. At first, it was a difficult thing for my pride to accept, for be honest, I thought that grace was for the really bad people that needed it, after all, I grew up around church and knew the Bible, I wasn't really that bad, was I?
A.W. Towzer once wrote... "You cannot know the true grace of God who has not first known the fear of God". God's holiness had made me fear the day I would stand before him without excuse. And yet, God's grace and goodness was my only hope for a new heart, and a new day.
It has been said that grace is a lot like a rare and priceless diamond put in front of a black piece of velvet. It's striking features and radiant brilliance are illuminated when it is put in front of the black backdrop. The more black the backdrop, the more brilliant the diamond becomes. "He who has been forgiven much, loves much". God's grace becomes even more glorious in light of our guilt and inability to save, change, or reform ourselves. (Eph 2:1-10).
In Bible College, one of my teachers faithfully drilled the definition of grace in our heads hoping it would sink deep into our hearts. He said "Grace, is God's unmerited favor, lavished upon the infinitely ill deserving". We learned that definition well, and it has proven to be so true. As I look back on ten blessed years of marriage to a wonderful wife that I could never deserve, the blessing of four precious daughters, and the privilege of serving the Lord ...I agree... grace is unmerited favor.
Paul writing to Titus said, "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men" (Titus 2:11) When you take a long look at who Jesus is and what God did for you and me by sending Jesus to take our place on the cross, we see a clear picture of Grace Amazing.
These songs mark some of the different places and seasons the Lord has brought me and my family through in these last 10 years. I pray that through them you would remember that God's grace is sufficient for you. And that you would be greatly edified and encouraged to lift you gaze to heaven and raise your voice in praise to our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ! God Bless You!
