Sciatica. What is it? Who is it? Medically speaking, sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve is pinched, causing a shooting pain to radiate into and throughout the leg and lower back. Sciatica isn't life-threatening, but it burns and lingers and most definitely can't be ignored. Musically speaking, Sciatica is a 4-person band of Hardcore Buddha Metalists from Huntsville, Alabama who create intense, honest music that also burns and lingers and most definitely can't be ignored. Since forming in March of 2004 by the husband and wife duo Mike and Christine, who share lead vocal duties, Sciatica has been pinching the nerves of extreme music fans all over the Southeast and beyond. The group, which saw bassist Chris join the fray in November 2004 and drummer Jarrod in April 2005, has already played shows in Birmingham, Huntsville, Decatur, Montgomery, Dothan, Nashville, Chattanooga, Gainesville, and Chicago, not to mention a host of other towns and cities throughout Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida. Along the way they've played alongside bands like Psyopus (Metal Blade Records) and Look What I Did (Combat Records), among others. During the summer and fall the group plans to expand their reach as they tour throughout the US, including stops in New York, Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia, and Seattle, where they will spread their music and the emotional and intense live show that accompanies it. Despite being around for just over two years, the members of Sciatica bring a wealth of previous experience to the band. Together, the four have been in roughly 8 million bands, give or take a band or two. Mike (lead vocals/guitar/mystical tattoos) spent the last 10-12 years punishing subservient ears in Pain Factor, PKD, XForthwrightX (on Morphine Records . . .F5 division), Grounded, Crown of Thorns, and a host of other bands whose names and legacies, like the most evil and fearsome of creatures, are best left unspoken. Chris (bass/bionic piercings) logged time in Severed Sanity and Burning the Flames at Both Ends. Jarrod (drums/thundersticks) played in 3rd Degree, Crackbox, and other indie bands. Christine (lead vocals/banshee) seems like she's been doing this for years, although she's actually the group's lone newcomer. Now signed to New York indie Dreamscape Records, Sciatica is poised to unleash a unique brand of Hardcore Buddha Metal upon the world. Mike's growling vocals coexist alongside Christine's cleaner tones. Brutal guitar riffs march alongside subterranean basslines that seem to be digging their way deep into the darkest recesses of the human soul, while rapid-fire drumming holds the whole thing together. Sciatica is 100 real, 100 scary, and 100 genuine. They've been biding their time up until now, but the group is ready to explode upon the scene and redefine the very meaning of extreme metal. This is only the beginning . . . . A review of the band's EP can be found at http://www.metalreview.com
