The Non-Filters were formed in the mid 1950's during the first wave of rock n roll artists. Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Elvis Presley get a great deal of credit for starting what The Non-Filters claim is their true glory. "We had the sound before any of them," claims original lead vocalist Mikey Cornett." Original lead guitarist Evan Jacobs takes credit for 'inventing rock n roll guitar.' The band seemed doomed to obscurity following the explosion of Presley's popularity in the late '50s, which carried into the '60s and '70s. Following Presley's death in 1977, The band made a strong push into the funk genre. Seen as old-timers who could not possibly have a true feel or understanding of the music they were attempting to play, the funk records did not sell well. The younger audience also complained that the band did not play very well. In the early '90s, The Non-Filters switched their sound again. Feeling that funk had taken them as far as it could, the band tried its hand at grunge. The band stayed afloat for another decade without making much impact on the alternative charts. Far too old to be taken seriously in this fairly new genre, Cornett and Jacobs decided to replace their longtime drummer with Eric Baker, and their bassist, founding member Darryl Clemens, with Bill Shewmaker. The two new members fit right in. Two months into their first tour, they showed signs of strong decision making ability when it came to doing what was best for the band. They called a vote on whether or not Mikey Cornett should be fired from The Non-Filters. Baker and Shewmaker both voted to give him the axe. After about a ten second pause, Evan Jacobs raised his hand, too. After nearly fifty years, Cornett was gone. Baker said, "I hate playing drums. Instead of looking for a new singer, I'll just do it." Kipp Ballard was brought in to replace Baker on drums. Shewmaker decided he would rather play guitar than bass, so with the help of Kipp Ballard, the three new Non-Filters out-voted Evan Jacobs, who was assigned bass duties and later fired. Lee Sadler took his place in 2007. Kipp Ballard quit in 2010. Bill Shewmaker's contract expired about a month later and was not renewed.
