About âMake Someone Happyâ

âMake Someone Happyâ was recorded on May 27th and 28th. 2011 at Canal Street Studio in Rome, NY. Personnel include Andrew Carroll, Rick Montalbano Jr, Neal Miner, and I. Guest artists featured are Jane Monheit, John Rohde, and Jimmy Johns. Rick Montalbano Sr. was the sound engineer.
The two days of recording were full of laughter, good eating, and great music.
The album can be summarized with one word, friendship. Most everyone involved attends a restaurant called âPastabilitiesâ located in Armory Square of Syracuse, Ny. Every Wednesday night we play music and hang out with one another. Most of the music we play are arrangements are Rick Montalbano Sr. Having a regular time to meet one another has caused personal relationships and musical relationships to grow exponentially. I feel very blessed to have all of these people in my life.

About the songs:

1. Peter Bernsteinâs âJet streamâ was off an album that Rick Montalbano Jr. gave to me as a gift. He said it would be nice for the four of us to play this particular track together. It was such a great fit that it ended up as the first track of the album!
2. Tadd Dameronâs âOn a Misty Nightâ is a song that both Andrew and I have always loved to play together. This particular arrangement has guest artist John Rohde on Tenor Saxophone.
3. I first heard Jane sing âBewitched, Bothered, and Bewilderedâ at a gig we had together the Rome Arts Center. The passion and phrasing in which she was singing could lead you to believe she wrote the song herself. So, I wrote an arrangement of the Rogers and Hart classic âBewitched, Bothered, and Bewilderedâ.
4. Harry Allenâs âI Can See Foreverâ is a tune introduced by a guest vibraphonist on the album Jimmy Johns. Jimmy had transcribed the song for us to play on a gig together and I really enjoyed it. At the time, Jimmy was on drum set. The song had no lyrics and I always wondered what it might be about. When Jimmy showed up at my grandfatherâs funeral, I realized how great friendship is.
5. Brad Mehldauâs âLondon Bluesâ literally came from a phone conversation that I had with Rick Montalbano while he was away with Jane Monheitâs band. He said, âI just listened to âLondon Bluesâ 10 times. Fitting with âMake Someone Happyâ I decided to write an arrangement of âLondon Bluesâ that featured solo section as a minor blues.
6. Jule Syneâs âMake Someone Happyâ is the title track. The arrangements were all composed with these specific band members in mind.
7. âWaltz for Debbyâ is a song that pianist Andrew Carroll and I have listened to several times. Itâs a very complicated song and not played often. However, I knew that everyone in the band is a fan of Bill Evansâ music, so it would be a great fit and it was!
8. âEast of the Sunâ by Brooks Bowman is the bonus cut of the album. We play a song called that Rick Montalbano Sr. wrote called âEast Ofâ on Wednesday nights. Since we had been playing it so often together it only made sense to record âEast of the Sunâ.
9. âSome Other Timeâ by Leonard Bernstein is a song that Jane, Rick, Neal, Andrew, and I love. It is about the busy lives of musicians and how we would love to spend more time with each other.
