Details:
Bio: My Mum first taught me how to play the piano when I was about 3 years old. Thatâs probably when my love of music first started. Playing just came pretty naturally to me. Mum and Dad also encouraged me to sing at an early age. I used to sing duets with my sister to entertain my parents as we traveled in the car on our country drives. Dad would later record our voices on a little cassette recorder for fun. I also started singing in the school choir and performing in school musicals. As a teenager I naturally got into pop and rock music. Hence my piano and singing practice at home became rather loud and âbangingâ which my Mum had to endure. Maybe thatâs how I vented all my rebellious angst . After studying Economics at Uni I started working in large corporations. However my love for music was constantly calling my name. Hence I started writing songs and found the process so fulfilling I decided to record some of my songs on a CD. The result is a self made album called âBreaking Throughâ. Over the years I have performed in various venues in Brisbane and Sydney Australia. One of the highlights was performing a few of my songs at the Sydney Town Hall for a Christmas Concert. Itâs always exciting performing for a large crowd. Nowadays I find am only happy if I am working in the music field. Hence I also took up piano teaching after I left office work. I enjoy talking to all the students and they often feed me with new ideas for my own creativity. Cheerio for now and Happy Listening!

Website Interview with Beverley Tang

1. Welcome everyone to our interview with Beverley Tang. Hi Beverley how are you going?

Pretty good thanks Leighton.

2. Firstly for the benefit of those listeners who donât know you well , could you tell us a bit about yourself?

Sure. My name is Beverley Tang and Iâm a singer/ songwriter & recording artist.

3. Where are you from Beverley?

Iâm originally from Sydney Australia and was born in a suburb out west called Liverpool.

4. And what do you have available for our listeners today?

I have just released my new CD called âBreaking Throughâ and itâs now available by mail order from my âBuy Musicâ page on this website.

5. Fantastic. I thought weâd just back track a bit and ask you how you first started in the music field and came to the point of releasing this new CD called âBreaking Throughâ.

Well, I was trained in Classical Piano when I was growing up so thatâs probably how I grew to have a real passion for music and the arts in general. As a teenager I branched out into more contemporary music and pop rock . I also loved singing, and used to copy the voices of all my
Favourite pop rock artists. Playing piano was also a great way I could practice my singing since I could accompany myself.

I was also inspired by an American Singer Ellen Sanborn who formerly sang in the West End on the stage. When she gave me a few singing lessons she said I was good enough to record my own CD. I was blown away by such encouragement and praise and started dreaming about a career as a recording artist.

I wasnât entirely enjoying my office job at the time, so later on I began to write songs. When I had written enough to make an album I decided to record them on a CD. So I sunk most of the money I had saved up to record an album.

When it was time to write my second album I decided to write all the backing arrangements myself and record it through the help of a skilled friend. The outcome is my recent creation called âBreaking Throughâ

6. Why did you call the album âBreaking Throughâ?

Because the whole theme of the album is about breaking through barriers or walls in our lives. For example breaking through a difficult , situation, relationship or even our relationship with God. The songs not only describe the trials we face in our lives but also gives a positive message of hope as well.

7. What are you favourite tracks and why?

I like the rockier tracks like Love and Self Control since I enjoy singing this style . I also enjoy Dream which was inspired by the Olympic Games as well as Eyes On You . These are my favourite ballads on the album since they describe a little of my own journey.

8. What are your creative ambitions for the future?

I want to keep writing songs because I find this process really satisfying and fulfilling. Iâm sure I receive a lot of divine help from above. But it is really exciting to see a song emerging out of nothing then finally playing the end product and actually liking what Iâve created. I also want my songs to say something worthwhile since music can be such a powerful medium which can really speak to people on a deep level.

9. What are your plans for your next album?

I have already written four more albums which I want to record eventually.

10.Who are your influences?

Early on, I would listen to a lot of female vocalists like Gloria Estefan, Mariah Carey, Tina Arena and Jaci Velasquez who is my favourite gospel singer. Then there was a period where I was really into jazz music like Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Natalie Cole.

Listening to Abba songs helped me when I was doing my own backing arrangements. To me they are the creators of the âperfect pop songâ in their time. All the different elements in their songs just gel together so well to produce a musical work of art.

My latest album was heavily influenced by the band Evanescance since I love their haunting ballads and heavier rock feel.

11. So you really like to listen to a whole range of styles which must make your own music sound quite unique and interesting. Thanks Beverley for sharing with us today.

Just a reminder to you that Beverleyâs CD is available now. You can listen to the songs on the âMusic Pageâ and purchase your copy from the âBuy Music Pageâ. Get your copy today!

Beverley Tang - Singer / Songwriter

My earliest memory isâ¦. my sister doing up the buckles on my sandals since I couldnât dress myself yet.

At school I⦠I used to be good at hockey & volleyball . I have now totally lost these skills.

My first relationship was⦠with my favourite soft toy which was a light blue duck. I was often heard around the house calling âWhereâs my duckie?â

I wish Iâd never wornâ¦out my âduckieâ by chewing on it.

My Mother and Father always told meâ¦. to do my piano practice (when I was secretly watching TV)

I wish I hadâ¦. A better music memory for piano â¦â¦. or just a better memory in general

I wish I hadnâtâ¦â¦wagged my school swimming lessons. I could have enjoyed the water at an earlier age

My most humiliating moment wasâ¦.. when I was forced to perform a drama on stage at Youth Camp and it was a total disaster.

My happiest moment was⦠when I passed my Eighth Grade Piano exam with very minimal practice.

At home I cookâ¦. boiled vegetables.

My last meal would beâ¦.. Yum cha

My favourite gadget isâ¦. My mini CD player. Music helps to motivate me at work.

Iâm very bad atâ¦.. remembering peopleâs names who I have just met

When I was a child I wanted toâ¦â¦learn how to play the flute

The Book That Changed My Lifeâ¦â¦Secret Strength by Joni Eareckson

Itâs Not Fashionable but I loveâ¦..wearing socks with sandals to keep my feet warm when itâs cold.

Friends say I am â¦â¦ not quiet, even though I think I am.

Perhaps I should have studiedâ¦â¦â¦Pre-school Teaching

If only I could â¦â¦â¦â¦be a bit more decisive

Iâm always being asked⦠do you write the words or music first (I like this question though).

If I wasnât me Iâd like to be â¦â¦â¦â¦.a bit taller

At the moment Iâm readingâ¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.the bible

My favourite work of art is â¦â¦â¦â¦ all the flowers , fruits and veges that God has made. Thereâs too many to name.

If I were a car Iâd be â¦â¦â¦.my Daihatsu Charade, because itâs cute and zippy.

I often wonderâ¦â¦â¦â¦.. what it would be like not to have an artist temperament.
