Critical Acclaim for Jamie Broumas, Blue In Green:

Marshall Keys and Tom Williams are listed as the only horn players on Jamie Broumasâs new album, âBlue In Greenâ. But by the end of the first cut, a bright and boppish treatment of âYou Stepped Out of a Dreamâ, itâs clear Broumas has the vocal agility and harmonic finesse to join their ranks and charm ours.
For Further evidence, consult âToku Doâ, which finds the singer harmonizing the descending bass linbes that bassist Steve Novosel nimbly puts into motion before Broumas locks âhornsâ with Keyâs lithe and sunny sax.
This is not, however, an album in which wordless flights are taken at the expense of a songwriterâs intent. As graceful and alluring as her scat passages and harmonizing can be, Broumas clearly knows the value of a good lyric and is careful to make sure her technique serves them. Her bittersweet reading of the Miles Davis cut (with original lyrics by Michael Kernan and a lovely, shimmering solo by pianist Cyrus Chestnut), her reflective, sigh-ful version of âThe Sad Onesâ (sensitively accented by Williamsâs fluegelhorn) and her poignant rendition of âHe Never Mentioned Loveâ (again elegantly punctuated by Chestnut) attest not only to Broumasâs taste in balladry but her ability to interpret them soulfully.
Nicely rounding out the cast is drummer Aaron Walker, though both reedman Charlie Young and pianist Reuben Brown (who donât perform on the album) also deserve plenty of credit for helping tailor the colorful arrangements. ---Mike Joyce, The Washington Post
