NLB (Neal Lucas Band) has always admired the improvisational qualities of the soul, rock, and blues artists from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Music created in those genres, throughout that time period, was transparent and left in its natural raw form. There was bravery within the artists to leave whatever mistakes they made on the recordings. NLB has adopted this trait into their creative process and musical doctrine. For this project these guys performed for three hours straight and although they had a set plan for how the night would go, that plan quickly got thrown out the window at the moment of the show's downbeat. What has been documented here is three guys, who are as close as brothers, displaying their musical tastefulness, diverse vocabulary on their instrument, as well as their unbelievable internal connection between them. This connection allows them to each stick to the understood form of the song while coming up with the same unrehearsed ideas at the same time without even so much as a look or shrug of a shoulder.
"Badge" is a powerful proclamation piece that showcases a solid blend of blues and rock. "Hold It Up High" and "Half Steppin' " stand as uplifting offerings that not only encourage, but challenge listeners to shine and put forth their best effort in all that they may be doing with their lives.
"Cradle" is a song reminding each of us of the beauty that exists in being pure and untainted as a newborn baby, hoping to be washed and made new like a child. "Not My Cross To Bear" (featuring Clay Fuller of the band, Allgood) is the band's way of paying homage to one of their performing and songwriting heroes, Gregg Allman, as it is an intense and ever meaningful classic by the legendary Allman Brothers Band.
One song that truly highlights the NLB's beautiful internal synchronization is the sixth track, "Time And Time Again" (featuring Clay Fuller of the band, Allgood), where halfway through the song, drummer, Steve Thompson and, bassist, Evan Collins take, guitarists, Neal Lucas and Clay Fuller on an impromptu and unplanned journey. "Promise" was written as a commitment, between a husband and wife, to remain true and faithful to one another through all that life brings. "Good Fire" may well be the perfect follow up to "Promise" as it urges the listener to stand firm against the harmful temptations that we encounter in our daily lives and acknowledge the "good fire burning at home", instead of what may be lurking on the outside.
"Smokehouse" is the band's symbol of appreciation for soulful, jazz, and fusion music, and is the only fully instrumental offering on this project.
"Measure" marks the grand finale of the album and leaves us all with a contemplative warning against judging one another as we all have had our failed moments in this life, and are all in need of someone's mercy at times.
NLB's passionate dedication to creating positive and thought provoking work is a never ending venture, and because of this, we hope that you have been touched and left wanting more from these three deacons of soul healing blues.
