Naked Planet is an earthy & exotic fusion of ethnic & western styles. The work that hails from this artist can be described as chillout, ambient or simply electronica. But like so many artists who follow their own inner voice, it is difficult to apply a label that accurately describes the music of Naked Planet. There is an inherent problem with labels, useful though they sometimes are, as they present the artist with the dilemma of self limitation. The music of Naked Planet, however, is unflinchingly eclectic & open to change.
The opening track on 'Drum,' for instance, sounds tribal. It's a hypnotic cauldron of conga grooves & afro percussion. The third track, 'Neon,' an ethereal piece with Japanese motifs & even a cello solo towards the finale, makes only sparse use of percussion. 'Mirage' - track number five - contains practically no percussion at all. The listener is carried away on waves of haunting, Middle Eastern flute & gorgeous electronica, but there's nay a rhythm in sight to tap or groove to. This lies in stark contrast to the album's finale, a twenty minute excursion into percussion & Goa trance called 'Drum II,' a companion piece to the album's opening track.
But what listener's are presented with in 'Drum II' will most probably defy their expectation of what comprises Goa trance. Once again Naked Planet has shaken up the mix. The opening, to begin with, is definitely not typical of Goa. Well... the composer himself has described this work as merely Goa-influenced. Other's have described it as Progressional. But what it really is - in keeping with Naked Planet's 'expect the unexpected' motto - is an unfettered excursion into sound.
And that really sums up Naked Planet's first album.
