This synthesizer arrangement of Mars is unique in that it approaches the dramatic impact and dynamic range of a real orchestra while exploring new colors that can't be produced by an orchestra. This version uses almost 100 different synthesizer sounds (a sound being analogous to an instrument).

My goal, from the start of this project was to create a synthesizer arrangement that provides unique value. This turned out to be quite daunting, given Holstâs already extremely brilliant orchestration, and Tomitaâs ingenious synthesizer rendering. By the time the project was complete, I had ended up rejecting most of my work, and what remained as the finished product represented a small part of my total effort.

Technical Notes:
All work was done in the digital domain. For sound synthesis I used the Zebra, ACE, Tyrell N6, z3ta2 virtual instruments. I used Uhbik for various effects, including reverb, grain, and distortion. I used Sonar X1, 64-bit for my digital audio workstation.

Mike is a composer who lives in Evanston, Illinois, with his lovely wife, Tricia, and daughter, Kate. Also in his family are: Louie (dog), Seven (cat), Harry & Ron (guinea pigs), Cedric (leopard gecko), Hermione (hermit crab), and Zack (fish).

Mike has loved classical music for almost 40 years now. He composes to reflect his deep love of music.
