Above Beyond guitarist, Russ Schulz, delivers an array of power- packed guitar craftmanship with his sixth release Ulterior Motifs. Prepare for sixty-five minutes in a deep listening excursion with this collection of diverse rock based instrumentals. The music is flavored with blues, jazz and Latin rhythms that explore the frontiers of cutting edge rock fusion and a few mellow passages as well. The first piece, Infinitesmial Journey, begins with a chiming resonance emminating from a faraway distance into a harmonic valley, quickly ascending onto a firey plateau of guitar fusion before fading beyond the horizon. Next, Peacework is an entree topped with a little bit of salsa that zips in and out of various guitar tones. The third track, Hydroplane, takes you down a slippery road traveling at the speed of sound. Then Cruise Control puts your mind at ease as you sit back and enjoy the scenery flashing by. Collusion Collision is an escapade where musical textures and colors collide. The Running Of The Grunion pertains to a small Pacific coast fish that when spawning, ride a wave onto the beach. After mating the female deposits it's eggs in the sand, and they then catch the next wave out. (According to Russ, people go out late at night to collect them, but no one seems to know what to do with them). Afterward, Mudslide is an exercise in rounds much like the kind sung in grade school music class (as in Row Row Row Your Boat). Russ thought it would be fun to do this with bluesy slide guitars. Following Mudslide is Staring Off Into Space - a soothing ambient mode facilitated by gazing into the heavens and contemplating it's vastness. Diamond In The Rough corroborates the adage that all that glitters is not gold and Latin Limbo is another uptempo piece infused with Latin rhythms, tight acoustic guitar, and jazzy guitar synths. Float Trip might stimulate you to imagine that you're floating down a secluded stream of clear pristine waters while Automatic Pilot, is an extended jam featuring guitar bursts of energy with an abundance of notes crammed into small spaces. It started out with Russ just improvising to a basic beat. The rest of the instruments were added later. Finally, the collection ends on a more traditional note with Comfort Zone. Russ composed, played and produced the music and Nicole Harder did the cover art. Russ has spent his career playing in bands encompassing many genres including: rock, rhythm and blues, folk, psychedelic, country, and jazz in cover bands as well as those doing original material. He was inducted into the 2006 NE. Music Hall Of Fame with The Grapes Of Wrath, a rock band he played with during his teenage years. Also, he has several Above Beyond cds to his credit as well as his Transition collection, all of which are available at cdbaby and associates. At present Russ is laboring on other musical projects, including possibly a vocal cd and rock symphony, and plans to have them available soon. Peace.
