Details:
âPay attention to the sounds around you,â says internationally-known composer of manipulated sound R. Weis who releases âExcitable Audible,â his new CD of 14 songs created exclusively from original samples of commonplace sounds including trash hitting the trash can, plastic lids spinning, kitchen dishes rattling, the dogâs ball bouncing and squeak toy squeaking, as well as Weisâ own voice. Songs range from up-tempo to otherworldly and celebrate the everyday sounds and sound-making objects in artist Weisâ home environment. For more information, visit rweis.com.
âExcitable Audibleâ continues Weisâ explorations of manipulated sound that began in the mid 1980s when, working as a poet, he began to manipulate cassette tape as accompaniment during presentations of his creative writing. These early audio experiments were so exciting that, in the early 1990s, he abandoned writing to focus exclusively on compositions of manipulated sound. Since then, his work has been heard at many performance spaces, galleries, museums, and on radio in the US and Europe, which includes solo projects as well as collaborations with film, visual art, and dance.
âThere are so many fantastic sounds in our daily lives that we hear but ignore,â says Weis. âWith this new CD Iâm challenging the audience to appreciate these sounds and hear what can be created from them.â Weis used only 19 samples to compose the new songs, with several samples making multiple appearances, notably a ceramic casserole with its glass lid rocking rhythmically as it was unloaded from the dishwasher. Also among the 19 samples are stainless steel bowls spinning, cardboard tubes dropping, rubber bands twanging, a Tibetan singing bowl reverberating (a gift from a friend), and the annoying buzz from Weisâ studio track lights. Vocal samples include Weisâ improvised five- and eight-tone lyrical phrases which are composed into interlocking melodic themes. The songs are each made from just 2 or 3 of these samples intertwined with one another.
To create this CD, Weis improvised with each of the original samples, manipulating and combining them at different speeds and pitches until new sonic patterns emerged. Portions of each sample repeat hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of times. âExcitable Audibleâ was created over a period of more than two years, from 2009 to 2011. See also R. Weis' CD "Mystery of the Egg."
