Angelo Gregorio is not just a saxophone player

He is a person who lives in music, he plays the guitar since he was 9 years old, he is a singer-song-writer, he plays the piano, he compose wonderful saxophone's melodies and even short novels; he is definitely a person that has something to say.

In 2008 he won the Dennis Irwin first price at the "Jazz in Laurino" festival as best saxophone player with the teacher George Garzone.

In 2009 he won the first price of the Conservatory "G. Martucci",Salerno, which led him to study one year at the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Bruxelles.

In September 2010 he started to work on "Alla Ricerca Delle Radici - Searching for the Roots" his first solo saxophone CD, where he also use the loop machine. (Trumpets Productions, LLC)
Most of the compositions are written by him, others are revisitations of evergreen classical melodies, and some of those have a spoken introductory story also written by Angelo.

What is âalla ricerca delle radici / searching for the rootsâ ?
Is the name of my 1st solo saxophone's work, where I also use the loop machine.
Most of the compositions are written by me, others are revisitations of evergreen classical melodies, and some of those have a spoken introductory story also written by me.

What means solo saxophone ?
Means that in the CD there will be just one saxophone playing.

What means âI also use the loop machineâ ?
I use, beside a totally new way of playing & using the saxophone, a tool called loop machine; the loop machine is a electronic pedal that record & loops the notes, sounds and effects which I do at the moment, LIVE, using JUST the saxophone, with NOTHING PRE-RECORDED.

What means âtotally new way of playing & using the saxophoneâ ?
Until now the saxophone is known like a melody instrument able to do one note a time (by using harmonics it's also able to play 3 different notes at the same time).
For produce a sound the saxophone needs a mouthpiece (placed at the end of the removable neck) with a wooden reed.
Well, this is the normal way, the new way is:
I play melodies without the mouthpiece and even without the removable neck;
I play the saxophone in a way that I'm reproducing the sound of the drums, with a very special color never heard before from a saxophone, and I am, of course, able to play many different rhythms;
I combine these things with the loop machine and the results are: timeless atmospheres, lyrical melodies that are floating on primitive rhythms, intimate moments, effects and sounds that are clearly guiding the listeners to faraway places through images, feelings, emotions and sometimes even through smells.
All this happens at the moment with just one instrument...my saxophone...and nothing, NOTHING PRE-RECORD.

What means ânothing pre-recordedâ ?
Means that I do not have any effect, sound, drums beat and loops, already recorded.
I do everything at the moment, live; and this, when you see me live, is what always makes the songs very particular and different in every concert.

What do you mean with ârevisitation of evergreen classical melodiesâ ?
Having a degree in classical saxophone and having had an exceptional teacher of music history (F.Turano) with who I discovered some of the most beautiful and touching classical melodies I felt the desire to play them in my own way.

What is the âspoken introductory storyâ ?
I see the introductory story as a way to take the listeners by the hands and softly accompany them into the mood (I like to call it room) of some songs.

Were you inspired by someone ?
Yes I did, and this person, with his music, really opened my eyes and my ears and of course my soul and gave me the inspiration to move into other directions.
