LINER NOTES:

Since I was a small boy, the music of the movies has always been a major influence in the songs I love to sing. I remember fondly my grandmother taking me to the movies where I was first introduced to such great artists as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Doris Day as they sang wonderful songs that became part of the great American song book.

George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and later Henry Mancini are all examples of some of the great composers that wrote either specifically for films or wrote songs that were later used in films. Over the past few years, I have seen a trend toward bringing back the great standards for popular movies. Since I love movies and the great standards, Iâve been inspired to do an album made up of some of my favorite songs most of which were performed in films during the last fourteen or fifteen years. Iâve been fortunate enough to work with some of the finest jazz musicians in the Los Angeles area, many of whom have become dear friends. I feel particularly lucky to have worked with several of these great players on this project. George Gaffney, Llew Matthews, and Joe Massimino have done a wonderful job of arranging the music and playing the piano for this movie album. Peter Woodford has not only produced with remarkable talent and expertise, but has played the guitar beautifully as well.

A heart-felt thanks goes to three of Frank Sinatraâs touring band members, trumpet player Buddy Childers, bassist Jim Hughart, & pianist/arranger Bill Miller who played for Frank for more than 40 years. Iâm especially grateful to Bill for reprising âOne For My Babyâ which he did with Frank in the 1950âs movie "Young At Heart" and again on the landmark 1958 album "Only The Lonely." Many thanks to Tom Ranier for his beautiful string arrangement for that song.

A few years ago, I was privileged to meet the wonderful composer Neal Hefti while singing in a Los Angeles night club. Since I had previously recorded his song âGirl Talkâ from the film "Harlow."

I gave him a copy of the CD that evening. He had written another song for that same film named âLonely Girl,â which I chose for this CD. Neal was kind enough to call and say that he was well-pleased with what we had done with his song. I would hope that you will feel the same.

ââ Jack Wood

BIOGRAPHY

Jack Wood, a familiar face on the Southern California jazz scene (as both concert producer and singer), has performed and recorded with many of the finest and best-known jazz musicians in the Los Angeles area.

Since his early days with the Ronnie Brown trio, which included musicians John Clayton on bass on Jeff Hamilton on drums, Jack has devoted himself to performing and recording the great standards. His most important influences have been Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Tormé and Jack Jones. He is equally at home singing an up-tempo jazz tune, a romantic ballad or a sensual bossa nova.

Top musicians who have regularly worked with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole and Diana Krall also work with Jack. The players often comment on his impeccable intonation and smooth, clean sound. The late Chuck Niles, a renowned DJ who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, wrote on Jackâs CD, Baby, Baby All The Time, âJack has a delightful, appealing style in honoring the the American songbook.â Bobby Troup, who used to come to Jackâs club dates, wrote regarding two of his songs that Jack had recorded, âJack, thank you for singing my songs so well.â Alan Bergman, Oscar and Grammy award-winning lyricist of Alan and Marilyn Bergman fame wrote to Jack regarding his recording of their song, âMoonlight,â which was nominated for an Oscar for best song from the movie Sabrina. Alan wrote, âItâs quite a good job,â and then volunteered to send a copy of the recording to John Williams, who wrote the music for the song.

Performances for Jack have included small clubs, college theaters, large amphitheaters and jazz festivals. He has opened for Sergio Mendez and Maureen McGovern, and has appeared in jazz festivals alongside of Nancy Wilson, Jack Jones and Eddy Daniels. Jack appeared during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City at the famous Snowbird Resort and has also entertained in Park City, Utah.

Jackâs clean-cut handsome image, his warm personal rapport with an audience and his superb engaging voice makes him a favorite among fans. He is an artist with class and style.
