What Goes Around
This album and the roads that got to its being made are dedicated to the memory of three of our fans, Jim Doran, Nancy Hanson, and June Fallon.
Ten years on and itâs a new millennium.
The âFolk Processâ is much like the wheel of life. And just as in the childrenâs game of telephone, nothing comes back exactly as it went out. Words get changed, garbled. Different versions marry and produce offspring of their own. Melodies mutate and nuances flourish. Much is the same with the songs herein. Some of these are our interpretations of songs that weâve come to know and love. Some of the songs are well known, others, for reasons unbeknownst to us, rarely hear the light of day (âCruiscin Lanâ), some have been hiding since God knows when (âBallad of Terrence Muldoonâ). Surely itâs no fault of the songs.
The process goes further, as ideas percolate and perambulate and out pops an âoriginalâ number, although the notes and melodies may have existed in another time or place. Tommy Makem puts it very well when he says that songs are in the air all about you. When they want to be written theyâll whisper in your ear-provided youâre listening that is. So, weâve included a few songs that whispered in our own ears. Some, like âThe Old Wisconsin Riverâ took a couple of decades to decide if they wanted to be completed. Others, like âGive Love A Chanceâ came about as mere exercises.
Over the course of the last 10 years weâve had the opportunity to see, hear, and/or meet (some via email) many of the great musicians who have influenced our take on this process. We have also stolen everything weâve been able to from many of them (some with their permission!). So, thank you for your time, talent and inspiration: Tommy, Shane, Conor, and Rory Makem, The Clancyâs, Robbie OâConnell, and Christy Moore.
So, thatâs our story and weâre sticking to it. Thanks also to our families whoâve traveled great distances at times in inclement weather to hear us as weâve kicked around southern Wisconsin (weâll play in Illinois some time for real we promise!) and to the rest of our fans around the country whoâve hung in there and listened with open ears and hearts as weâve learned how to be one more conduit of the folk process.
This album features Bill Fallon guitar and vocals; Ben Doran hammered dulcimer and vocals; Michael Staszak acccordion, vocals, percussion; John Roche bodhran; Rick March mandolin, tenor banjo and guitar.
