Combining Mia Theodoratus on Celtic Harp and Nick Smith on Tabla, Jah-La is an exciting blend of free improvisation and North Indian Classical music. Together they have twisted the basic forms to make them more accessible to the night club(CBGB, Tonic, Knitting Factory) scene and various under ground clubs and squats in NYC. .

Jah-La has released aCD 1 Swirl on NI records. This Disc also features legendary bassist Tony Maimone(Pere Ubu and They Might Be Giants) . Also available is an EP with new songs called Misery featuring Buddy Woodward from the Nitro Express on banjo.

Mia Theodoratus started out her life as a harpist going though the usual classical training- the Peabody Conservatory 'til the money ran out, BFA at UT Austin, MFA at CALARTS with Susan Allen, Charlie Hayden, and Amiyo Dasgupta(student loans to prove it!). While in California she tired of her profitable career playing near "the Blue Piccasso" for many posh occasions and drove in search of musical freedom to NYC. At the sleepless city she has played with an amazing variety of music. Most noted are Free Jazz players Daniel Carter, Rashid Bakr, and Sabeer, rock groups Spookarma and Vardo, theater groups the Blue Johnsons and Travis D. Vaudville, and also works as a studio musician at Big House and National. In the future she plans to continue studying North Indian Classical music and is learning how to play blue grass.

Nick Smith studies Punjabi-style tabla with Kinar Seen and is trying to catch the drumming style of Keith Moon on tabla. Nick is a featured player with touring Indian groups as well as regularly "laying down the tal" for sitarists in East Sixth St. in NYC.
