In this impossible to describe and utterly unique, solo, tonal expression called a solopera, Thoth uses pyrotechnical vocals, violin, foot drums, and percussion to tell the epic story about a heroic hermaphrodite in a mythical land called the Festad.
27 MP3 Songs
WORLD: World Fusion, CLASSICAL: New Age
Details:
Thoth prayforms a unique art form called a solopera. The solopera is based upon metaphorical legends from the mythological world of the Festad - a land about which Thoth has been writing since a child. Drawing from every center of Thoth's being, a solopera is part vocalizing, puzzle, aerobics routine, monolog, language deconstruction, alchemy, theater, healing ritual, sacred dance, all accompanied by solo violin and complex percussive rhythms.
Thoth has been prayforming his epic solopera, "THE HERMA:The Life and Land of Nular-in," daily at the Bethesda Terrace Arcade in New York City's Central Park for three years. In addition, he has prayformed the solopera in many different places - Paris, Berlin, Chicago, Cologne, Prague, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Portland & Eugene, Porto, Montreal, Los Angeles... and in the San Francisco Bay Area for the AfroSolo '99 Theater Festival, Z Space, Venue_9, Sweetwater, Freight & Salvage, Hotel Utah, Paradise Lounge. He has appeared on "The View" and the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
In 2001, award winning director Sarah Kernochan made a documentary about Thoth's life and work which won the 2002 Academy Award for Documentary on a Short Subject. The film was premiered on HBO's Cinemax in August 2002. On September 2002, he released his newest CD - the third and final act of his epic solopera "THE HERMA: The Life and Land of Nular-in."
Synopsis of "THE HERMA: The Life and Land of Nular-in, I"
translated from the Zilephs of Nular-in by Thoth:
(See Act II & III for the rest of the story)
"I, Nular-in, am born during the last, plague ridden age of the Festad. The clan lord, Pansu-ga seeks my death because I am a hermaphrodite, and it was augured that he would not be Qar (or emperor) because of a hermaphrodite. So he has ordered that all hermaphrodites be killed.
During his attempts to kill me, he destroys my desert oasis home and murders my father. A flying dragon (or Zentar) saves me and my mother from imminent death and takes us to live on a volcano, Mt. Irma. A few years (or Silvar later), Mt. Irma erupts and my mother and I are separated. I am adopted by a family who take me to live with them in their underwater city home. My adopted brother and I fall in love, but when he finds out I'm a hermaphrodite, he beats me almost to death"
