Of course it's going to be in the last place you look. Who finds something and then keeps looking for it?
- George Carlin
thelastplaceyoulook have been attracting fans from all sides of the country with a tempting aural confection that's part screamo, part hardcore, and all beguiling audio pheromones to delight and enthrall audiences of all backgrounds. Since their arrival on the Houston music scene in 2003, lead singer Nava, guitarists Richard Sherwood and Derek Young, bassist Kevin Pool, and drummer Andy Moths have self-financed and released two EPs, traveled the West Coast and Mid-West on winter tours, and earned the title of âBest Screamo / Hardcoreâ from the 2005 Houston Press Music Awards, all while maintaining a steady barrage of local appearances, both electric and acoustic. With bands such as Glassjaw, The Used, and Underoath serving as thelastplaceyoulookâs chief musical influences, their songs often combine tight, interlocking syncopated rhythms with harmonized guitar riffs and dissonant, staggered song structures. As the guitars of Sherwood and Young mingle into one glorious cacophony, so do the opposing vocal pitches of Nava and Pool manage to attack and compliment each other all at once. Propelled by Moths' machine-gun drumming, thelastplaceyoulook's sound melds into something comfortingly familiar yet altogether singular.
In January 2006, thelastplaceyoulook released their third EP. In âThe Lies We Tell Ourselvesâ, the band takes a sharp left turn into heavier, darker, and more thematically mature territory. Incorporating intricate wordplay and dense narrative structures, the albumâs five tracks bristle with anger, defeat, oblivion, heartbreak, acceptance, and even hope. The lyrics transcend rather than submit, but throughout they wrestle with the darker aspects of life and personality, which continue to make transcendence a constant struggle. The conflict is mesmerizing, and with the lyrics linked so tightly to the music going on behind them, the whole performance becomes a stage tragedy in the midst of a hurricane of sound and fury.
thelastplaceyoulook is famous for keeping in touch with their ever-growing fan base. From cheaply priced merchandise to free or reduced-price live shows to bounties on the internet, they're constantly thinking of ways to reward fans. Through the bandâs musical profile on the networking site "Myspace", thelastplaceyoulook introduced new songs to the public three weeks before the CDâs release: -"Iâve Got a Question for You, Why Are You Still Hereâ, âThey Only Give Medals to Heroesâ, and âHow to Say F**k Off in Russianâ.
âThe Lies We Tell Ourselvesâ can be purchased at Cactus Music, Soundwaves, and Sound Exchange.
thelastplaceyoulook has been heard on 94.5 the Buzz Houstonâs Premiere Rock Station (clear channel owned and operated) as well as the college and indie radio circuit in Arkansas and Texas. They have received reviews from The Houston Chronicle, The Houston Press and The Daily Cougar, the official newspaper for the University of Houston. The band continues to expand their listenership through flyers, online viral marketing, word of mouth, and sheer, consistent quality.
