THE SAYERS - bio / press - 1/2006
Tony Franco (guitar / lead vox) Christian Smith (bass, vox)
bio-
Two fifteen year old kids are skipping class to smoke cigarettes in the bathroom. They start meeting up in an independent music study class to make noise. Many bands and cigarettes later, The Turnstyles are born.
2001-2002. The Turnstyles - Four college kids in a Columbia, MO basement blowing off steam and having more fun than sardines packed in LSD. Songs written, gigs played, 1st demo recorded. Band relocates to St. Louis, MO. Exit 2nd guitar player and the band is reborn as a trio: The Sayers. 1st EP recorded and released. St. Louis' largest free press describe the band as -
"grimy power pop with flourishes of punk and soul...". "Chattering guitar hooks, gargle-mouth vocal hooks, chanting countdown hooks -- the Sayers have hooks....Twenty minutes of pop pleasure pass by, and you're ready to start the disc over again" - The St. Louis Riverfront Times
2002-2003. The first Sayers EP earns the band a nomination for "best pop band" and "best recording" in The Riverfront Times. With the help of community radio and regional promotion, the band racks up thousands of miles in the van covering the midwest circuit. Band goes on hiatus to record first LP and comes out a songwriting duo. 2004 is spent writing and recording demos. Band catalogs 58 new songs.
2005, late summer. The Sayers move to Los Angeles and complete their 1st instrumental, a four song EP entitled, "The Sayers: Say Nothing". 7 minutes of fuzz hooks and sugar-stupid fun. The first track, "Driving Weather", has been likened to Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World" on a trip to the beach. "Porch Light" is a Skip Spence / Sid Barrett era Floyd-esque trance painted in psycho-fuzz. 2 other EPs worth of instrumentals are also being recorded and will be staggered among upcoming vocal releases.
The Sayers are currently living and working in the studio on their next release with cigs burning in plain view.

Review of The Sayers : "Say Nothing" from EAR CANDY MAGAZINE, March, 2006.
The Sayers,"Say Nothing". A mellow, punk and soul, soundtrack for the working man. Sort of like a more laid back version of the Commitments. I loved that movie and these guys are every bit as infectious. This reminds me of a lot of Atlanta / Athens bands back in the eighties like Love Tractor, Oh O.K. and Pylon. The perfect soundtrack to a Dennis Hopper movie. Kind of brings to mind the soundtrack to Repo Man. Especially the scenes with the car in the desert and the highway patrol. Iâd say check them out for yourself and see what you think.
