Donât tell anyone that these guys arenât really an English pop band. They might hurt you. This new slab from Thinner is catchy as fuck. You will want to sing along with every melody and chime with every guitar and air drum till the cows come home. If Bram Tchaikovsky ever reunited and made an indie record, the single would be âColourform Girlsâ! And heyâIf you guys are so into the Brit pop thing, then why isnât it âColourform Girlsâ?? There are so many wondrous layers within each track that repeated listening is required and most welcome. It is all too rare that such great songs and such delicious ear candy can go so hand in hand, and for that I give much sonic kudos to producer Roger Lavallee, who is no stranger to the concept of layered texture. I will be listening to this EP for quite some time to come. Yow! thinnerrock.com (Joel Simches)
Review of a recent show: Worcester, MA
OK, 5 great bands played tonight at the Lucky Dog and I'm only going to talk about one of them. that band is Thinner. You may have heard of them, if you're lucky you've seen them. Likely, for most of you, you're still going "huh?" and putting on Blink 182 or Radiohead or Grateful Dead cds. Your loss. Those of us "in the know" as they say, are a privileged few who can bear nothing but to hear the succinct sounds of Thinner. Forget the radio garbage. Forget the hype machine. Forget what your friends tell you is cool. Either you like music or you don't. If you don't, you're a poseur for reading this so go home and work on your tan or something. If you like music, stay with me here... Why do you like music? Likely there are various reasons, it means something to you, the words have weight, the beat is good to move you, the melody is infectious (see also: humming unconciously). If any of these reasosn ring true then you owe it to yourself to listen to Thinner. Let me put it this way, I'm a musician, I see numerous bands all the time, listen to CDs 24/7 so I'm easily jaded. I listen to a lot of different styles, everything from Sonic Youth to Shakira. It takes a damn lot to impress me. It takes even more to make me shake my moneymaker. When I find myself pogoing to 1/2 dozen songs after already playing a show tonight then I know I'm onto something. Don't take my word for it though, you shouldn't. Ask the women throwing themselves onstage, the ones flashing the band, ask the club patrons eagerly buying shots for the band, ask the entire front half of a club that was bouncing insanely for over an hour - ask the crowd that was still there at 1:30am - a far more energetic and with-it crowd than I've seen at most places at 10am. Ask everyone who left there with a hoover dam sized grin, oh wait, was that the whole crowd? Was that 100+ people? Was this Worcester, the city everyone puts down? Welcome to Thinner. Welcome to the band that can take powerpop/punk/pop/rock and mix it with something so bittersweet as a Joy Division/New Order bassline to get you in familiar territory. Make the drums dead on. Done. make the guitar biting. Done. Make it edgey and polished at the same time. Done and Done. Make the songwriting perfect, I mean #@**$ perfect, they make the Fool Fighters look like Hole's first album, ok? Build it up, Take it away a bit, tease you, slam forward, etc.. Rhythm, balance, DYNAMICS, more pop sensibility than... well, I don't know what... Add humour, add only 3 guys doing this, add a feather boa cause why the heck not. Shows/music this good never hit the radio. There lies the rub. What do you do with a band that can sneeze and knock any rock band off the charts? Let alone one from some shitty burb called Wormtown. You ignore them. En masse, you ignore them. Which is how we want it. We the fans, we want Thinner as our secret treat. That perfect dessert you get at the corner bakery. The way only *that* ex knows how to kiss. The first car you ever drove over 100mph. Meaning. What more do you want? Personally, I'm about ready to throw out my guitar collection tomorrow. Any band that can transport me back a decade to when I was first seeing concerts and music was magic, to do that in this day and age.... Well screw you if you think I'm sharing them. They're too damn good. Come to the next show and fight for floor space like the rest of us rabid fans.

Me and my hiccups are going to eat cherries and go to sleep. Good show guys.
