This is the debut album from Thee O'Kellys. Folk-type ballads set to dark, lush instrumentation. Songs about love and death...what else is there, really?
8 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Goth, ROCK: Americana
Details:
Thee O'Kellys are Julie O'Kelly, voice and guitars, J.D. O'Kelly, voice, guitars, piano and other instruments, Aaron Swain, the drums, and Randy Blashke, the bass guitar.
The group was started in 2002 when Julie and J.D. established the project as an acoustic/electric duo. We are primarily interested in blending elements of American, British, and Australian post-punk and other visionary music (Joy Division, Rowland S. Howard, P.J. Harvey; Leonard Cohen, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Tom Waits, Bad Seeds) with the darker strains of American, Irish, and other folk - basically any of the older modal ballads that deal very directly with love, death, and transcendence - whether sung by Dock Boggs, Muzikas, or Shane MacGowan.
At the start, the 2 piece format was a self-imposed limitation so as to not compromise our vision for the music. But over time we began to feel the need for the drums and electric bass to achieve the kind of atmosphere the songs required.
Aaron Swain joined the group in the Fall of 2003. Our debut album, Attic Demos was recorded Spring 2003-Spring 2005. It has now been released on our own label, Messed Up Music. Randy Blashke joined the group in the Fall of 2004 initially for live dates, and has since officially become a member.
