THOUGHTS
1)Nothing âs ever as bad as they say it is. Itâs usually much worse
2)Nothingâs as good as you think itâs gonna be
3)More is never enough
4)Rock ânâ roll is much more dangerous than rock climbing

âThey â say timing is everything in the music business
Four places you can be:
1)Right place at the right time
2)Right place at the wrong time
3)Wrong place at the right time

Jay Turnbow

Jay Turnbow started in the recording and song-writing business at the late Norman Pettyâs studio in Clovis, New Mexico, during the time when Buddy Holly, Buddy Knox, the Fireballs, the Stringalongs, and Jimmy Gilmer were cutting hits there. While a student at Eastern New Mexico University in nearby Portales, Jay played lead guitar and wrote songs for the Ivy Jives, a well-known regional group. The Ivy Jives had releases on Jaro Records, a subsidiary of Top Rank Records out of New York. Working at Pettyâs studio, Jay became acquainted with King Curtis, Tommy Alsup, Waylon Jennings, Bob Montgomery, the Champs (Seals, Croft, and Burgess), and Larry Parks (drummer for Roy Orbison). In the early 1960âs, Jay played lead guitar in a Booker T and the MGâs road band and worked shows with the Markees, the Kingsmen, and the Surfaris. He and Larry Parks wrote songs together, and one of their first was âBread and Butterâ (see note) which led to their becoming staff writers for prestigious Acuff-Rose Music Publishing Company in Nashville. Among popular releases written by Turnbow and Parks at that time are âBirds are for the Bees,â âOh Girls,â and âHey-O-Daddy-O,â all recorded by the Newbeats. (Bob Finnicum was a co-writer on these three cuts.) Along with the late Mr. Wesley Rose, Jay and Larry produced the Sparkles for Hickory Records. âNo Friend of Mineâ and âOh Girlsâ were two of Jay and Larryâs more popular songs cut by the Sparkles.

In the 1970âs and early 1980âs, Jay performed in the Houston area and taught guitar for a large music store chain. Working in the Houston Gulf Coast, Jay performed shows with many popular entertainers including Willie Nelson, Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Brian Collins, Justin Tubbs, Leona Williams, Jimmy C. Newman, and Floyd Tillman.

He then moved to the 4 corners area of NW New Mexico where he and wife,Linda Jey performed as a duo in Colorado & New Mexico. He also taught guitar at two local music stores & was an adjunct professor of music at San Juan College teaching advanced guitar, theory & improvisation for several years. He now spends most of his time working on original music at his studio near Nogal,NM. His current CD is âout of the woodsâ.

BATTZZZZZ!< Mark Twain once said Washington,DC,was the only insane asylum in the world that was run by the inmates. He meant the place was BATTZZZZZ! When Ben Franklin was asked what kind of government the convention had given the people,he replied,âA republic,if you can keep itââ.Obviously ,he had some reservations about the prospects thereof. We,the people, are charged with maintaining a proper balance between a necessarily strong central government and the preservation of individual liberty,or âskating the razorâs edgeâ.Our system is a brilliantly conceived social, political, and economic imbroglio. The only problem is it assumes some semblance of integrity among the citizenry, and at least as much concern for the whole as for the self.Without trust there can be no commerce, only face to face barter, and thus more murder.Music & humor are two of our best legal coping mechanisms in an imperfect world.Even an avowed cynic like Kurt Vonnegut says music can not be âof manâ.There is a lot of irony in life & events as they play out.âBattle of New Orleansâ is one of my favorite songs by the late Johnny Horton. The irony of it is that the battle was fought Jan 8,1815,two weeks after a peace treaty had been signed on Dec 24,1814.The casualties were U.S. 71 to British 2,000 + ...Since war is like golf & low score wins, they went home, finally, until 1964.Then the Beatles invaded NY & took over rock& roll.Paybacks are hell ! A century earlier,in 1863 the army shot 1,000 draft rioters in NY.Seems they were POâd because they did not have the $300 needed to âbuy your way out of the draftâ!!??#@&$ Talk about âpayola !!" Of course youâd have to say that facing off at 100 yards with .58 caliber muskets, single shot,Napoleonic style, was a bit BATTZZZZ ! No âRunnin & Hidinâ,just shoot, load,& shoot again,if youâre lucky during the interim.I guess a year or twoâs wages was small price to avoid such if you had it ! Mass Duel---BATTZZZZZ ! Is that why they say artillery BATTery ?? Politicians think âcheckâ means flatten your rivals as in hockey so your cronies can âscoreâ ill gotten gain with impunity. On balance,SORRY,the ârazor â is winning as in chop, chop,olâ chap ! The only sufficiency in power lies in âjust a little bit moreâ.Just like money, guitar amp volume, singersâ reverb,etcâ¦..Oh ! Speaking of BATTZZZZZ, I almost forgot ! âHey Waiter !â âIâll have another of those nice fat brown ones all done up real crispy ! â AAAAAhhhhh BATTZZZZZ !
