ELECTRONIC: Pop Crossover, ROCK: Modern Rock
Details:
This first electronic rock band from Bali, dare I say, did a great job for their first solo performance in a rainy day at HRC. Sky's the limit and their sounds are different than most Bali rockin' alternative bands these days.
Using synth and computer programs as the backbone, they delivered 7[or 8] down to earth tunes. Semi-brit pop sounds, twisted with Pink Floyd mayhem mixed with dark ethnic melodies. "We play cosmic music..." says Igo! the singer, solemnly. "It's a mix between cosmo and ethnic music, we use the word cosmo in terms of modern music, techno stuff". Now you got the picture.
The Band [Igo!-vox, Fish-guitar and programs] have known each other since 96 and they always wanted to form their dream band but all were busy with their jobs and other bands. Finally they got together last year after the music scene in Bali began getting more 'sophisticated'. More music events and more bands making records.
Igo!, charismatic vox-veteran with his drier than Eddie Vedder-esque voice always put a strong commitment to every single word he sings. And Fish, the easy going always-smiling guitarist fills the distortion at the right moment after he lifts the whole room up with his flyin-high flange guitar effect.
Poetic, that's how the Telephone express their sound of artsy-art, even though the reason they picked the name Telephone is based on a very standard reason "Cos everybody has it, needs it and is using it" says Igo!. Fair enough in today's situation. After independently releasing a self-titled 6 song E.P, they're hoping to get a record deal with a cool and fair, major label even though they know there's still a long bumpy road to get there.
Back to the show, Telephone did a good re-make version of Plastic[Indo grunge pioneer] 'Seperti'. It's kinda interesting 'cause I haven't heard this song for ages - so soulfully maddening it gave me shivers. I think HRC should provide a more dramatic lighting for this kinda band cause their music would reach you easier thru extraordinary lights [blood red, dark blue or over pink], since their music is so moody and soulful. Maybe that's why the crowd -which wasn't too many- just stayed static the whole set. Apart from that, the show was awesome, good sound system in a gloomy situation. Here's a few little quotes from the proud members of Telephone about the greatest world issue since global warming - "sex, drugs and rock n'roll"
Fish> Sex is like water to me....
Igo!> rock n'roll is freedom [arghhhh!!!!]
