Rollicking, danceable rock music that is a modern take on late '70s punk, '60s pop and garage rock, and kooky electronic music, with sultry dual female vocals and fierce rhythms.
8 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Punk, ROCK: Psychedelic
Details:
Not quite distorted or angular enough to compare to Gang of Four, and not quite abstract enough to compare to Wire, The Broken Heart is New sounds something like a laid-back, cleaned-up distant relative of the two. The playing is simple and the vocals are gloriously plaintive.... this, of course, is why Telenovela's interpretation of this set of musical musings seems to work so well. Perhaps the strangest/most interesting thing about Telenovela is this: while the obvious Wire/Gang of Four/Kraftwerk (yes, Kraftwerk!) influences shine through, the pair of female vocal parts make everything sound (oddly enough) sweet like candy.
- Gary Blackwell, Delusions of Adequacy (www.adequacy.net)
Chicago guitarist Shelly Kurzynski-Villasenor (ex-puta-pons) met bassist Amy Malick (Ex-Danny Black), who in 2001 moved to Chicago from Seattle where she played bass and violin in bands for over a decade, through one of Chicago's weekly art rags in early 2003. They started a sporadic collaboration, and a few months later, excited by the results of their efforts, teamed up with Geoff Atkinson (ex-Peralta), a mean and lean young drummer whose powerful Gang of Four style beats gave their songs the edge they were looking for. They have since shared bills with the likes of the Muffs, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Outrageous Cherry, the Gore Gore Girls, Visqueen, and many well-known Chicago area acts. Telenovela recorded at Prole Arts in Chicago and released their debut album, The Broken Heart is New, on Vinahyde Records in late 2004.
