Here's a story about the first piano player we
auditioned for the album:
Little was known about the man, except that he liked free gas. Most folks in his area paid for their gas, but he was wont to prompt the clerk, "If I have to pay for this gas I will kill you." This is what led to his acquiring the gas for a significant discount, or free, but it is also what led to his 4-year stint in the slammer. This is where I met him. Never mind how I landed in the clink. He had only one ear (his right) which leant him his unique look. That, and the fact his teeth were a bright orange as a result of a horrific accident at a jelly bean company he had worked for six years prior.
I was insanely jealous of the man because he was the only inmate who was allowed coffee. My friend Appleseed and me would pour the hot coffee all over him before he could taste the delicious brew. He didn't mind the burns, so we made fast friends. It was Appleseed, the burned man, and me. We were like the Three Musketeers except that we were in prison and didn't have weapons per se, just a stick that Applejack widdled down on one end so it could scratch if you wanted it to.
Though horribly burned, he was a still a strong man. Due to his strength, we aptly named him "Asshole." He claimed it was too close a name to "Applejack," so we called him "Dumbass" which he found suitable.
Years later, Applejack and me were having drinks in Clearwater, Florida and bumped into Dumbass, who was at the piano. He still had only one ear, which didn't surprise us (because you can't just GROW an ear), so we poured hot coffee on him. We all laughed and shared stories of prison food.
