Details:
This is the first of three live albums weâve cultivated from two separate shows recorded at Kellyâs Logan House in Wilmington, Delaware. Both were recorded at what would prove to be poignant times for the band, both as a whole and as individuals. The first show, recorded on September 10, 2005, came only a week or so after we had first discussed the possibility of us not touring any more. With the exception of a handful of people in our inner circle, no one knew of this. We all recognized that this was one of our last chances to get our unrecorded material on tape, and the songs have a real sense of urgency as a result. The second show, recorded November 5, 2005, came after we had announced the end of the band. We all knew there were only a limited number of shows left.
The recorded versions of each song on this and the other two albums are exactly what we played on those two nights. The only editing done has been to master the recordings and place the songs in the order they appear on the albums. There are no overdubs on any of the songs. Any mistakes we made at the shows are there. Iâd like to say that this is completely intentional, but that of course wouldnât be true. The fact that the songs arenât perfect really happened out of necessity as much as anything else. It is great though, in that it allows us to document what we sounded like live at the top of our game. The songs presented here really do capture how we sounded at the pinnacle of our abilities as a live act â and we always were a much better live band than we were anything else.
Weâve tried to give each album a different flavor â to allow each to show a different side of our sound. This particular volume captures the emotional element of the band more than anything else. There are some of our crowd favorites, like âSilent Criesâ and âIâll Be Back Someday,â as well as some of our lesser known songs like âMollyâs Porchâ and âIvory.â The latter two are about as close as weâve come to writing ballads. âStorytellerâ appears here in a very different arrangement from the version that was on our EP âtheep.â - a version that really helps to bring out the meaning of the song. Although âDonât Let It Dieâ has a similar arrangement as its studio counterpart (on âSilent Criesâ), it also differs from its previously recorded version â as it really was different every night. âTall Grassâ is here as well, as are two of our favorite covers, âInto the Mysticâ and âThe Way It Isâ, which fit thematically with a lot of the songs weâve written - particularly the ones on this volume.
