Biography

Twas the winter of 2002. Susan and Catherine had landed in swinging London with a bass, a guitar and a broken PC. They had been writing songs since they were nine and thought it was about time someone other than the magpies outside heard them. Fearing they would be seen by someone they knew in Perth, they took their music to the smokiest pubs / clubs/ cafes and restaurants in London with the odd performance in Scotland and France.

They scored a residency at a quaint pub in Islington where many hip tourists, businessmen, anoraks and the odd film star would pop in. Due to constant confusion over names, the stage name Tall Poppies was formed. Playing mostly originals, the duo decided to write a new song each week to keep their sets fresh.

Susan reluctantly returned to Perth in 2003 to finish the long long long degree she felt she had to finish. Catherine stuck it out in Soho.... working with the producer at Tin Pan Alley studios on Denmark street. The twins wrote songs over the phone thousands of km apart. When Catherine returned to Australia they realised they had telepathic capabilites, as they had both written the same song at the same time.

In this time, younger brother Alex had become drum man extraordinaire and the three started jamming and performing together. Alex even began contributing to the lyrical content.

So they were all in Perth in 2004. They set up a home studio after fixing their well travelled PC, which had caught fire when they went for a run one hot summers night.
Oscillating between Blackbird sound studios and their home set up, they recorded their first album. A sample of the many songs they have in their ever expanding handbags.

Live, the band is intriguing, oozing style and confidence. Their voices have been described as (all the usual positive adjectives) "Amazing', "Awesome" "Fantastic" "You sent me straight to the clouds" "Shivers down the spine".

They are a cool and comfortably quirky band with the know how to transport one to a dimension of euphoria. Tall Poppies songs address the everyday and the unusual; they balance the comical with the melancholic.
