(ID 155493490)
By the time 1966 ended, many of the groups in Texas who started out playing British Invasion and folk-rock music, were now immersing themselves in the newly emerging psychedelic music. The five groups that comprise this album reflect the changes that occurred during this period and four of them changed their names to sound more psychedelic. The Nomads became Smoke, Carrols Mood became The Sights And Sounds, The New Imperials became The Front Page News, and The Boys became The Remaining Few. The featured band on this album -The Nomads/Smoke, started out playing folk-rock music, but by 1967 went psychedelic-as witnessed by their âfreak-outâ version of âMy Little Red Bookâ and lyrics to âMainstreamâ-âthe mailbox in your head is filled with liesâ. âCarrols Moodâ went from singing moody ballads such as âOut She Goesâ to surreal songs such as âMystical Bellsâ. The Front Page News from âBaby Let Me Bang Your Boxâ to the fuzz drenched âThoughts and Afterthoughtsâ. If the 13th Floor Elevator

The Nomads and Smoke-Houston. Their first single issued in 1967, reflected a folk-rock sound. They played âI Walk Aloneâ on The Larry Kane Show in early 1967. Their second single âThree OâClock Merrian Webster Timeâ b/w âSituationsâ reflected the psychedelic direction of the band. The band spent many hours in the studio working on these tracks. Recently, four unreleased versions of âThree Oâclock Merrian Webster Timeâ have been located and are presented for the first time. The Nomads changed their name to Smoke in late 1968, and released one single on Orbit Records, âMainstreamâ b/w âChurch House Smokeâ. Their image was influenced by The Doors, mainly Jim Morrison, as is evidenced by their sole photo from 1969. During this time they played Love St. with Procol Harum and also a gig in Austin to stop the Vietnam War, with Shivas Headband. Band members were-Frank Zigal-lead vocals, Doug Kirby-keyboards, Fred Thomas-bass, Shawn Bennett-drums, Brian Collins-lead guitar, background vocals.

The Rebellers-Houston. This band has been confused with The Nomads or may have had some connection with them for one song. The song was originally titled âUnder The Purple Sunâ but upon its release was titled âNew Generationâ. âNew Generation: was also mislabeled as by The Nomads on the Orbit Records mixdown tape box. The B-side of âNew Generationâ was âLove Of The Common Peopleâ, cover of a hit for a Washington DC band called The Winstons.

The Front Page NewsâThey hailed from Tulsa and were originally a soul group known as The New Imperials (replete with a couple of backup singers). They released a double entendre song called âBaby Let Me Bang Your Boxâ. In 1967, the band was re-located to Ft. Worth, less the background singers. The name change to The Front Page News did not occur until after the recording sessions for âThoughtsâ (original title was âThoughts And Afterthoughtsâ) and âYou Better Behaveâ. Members of the band were David Wadley, Sam Routh, and Gary Smith. After the recording sessions, a lease deal with Dial Records was arranged and the single was pressed in large quantities. Unfortunately few copies were sold due to no promotion by the label. The single did receive local airplay on the Ft. Worth stations. Of note is the fact that the single version of âThoughtsâ was edited down, so that the song finished with a fade out, before the loud fuzz guitar and feedback. The unedited version was released on the CD, âYour Mind Works In Reverseâ, for the first time back in 1998 and then on a volume of âGarage Beatâ, but a glitch at the end of the song remained. This version of âThoughtsâ is a different mix and has no defect on it. The flip side âYou Better Behaveâ displayed the rocking soul sound of the band.
The Remaining Few-San Angelo. As with many of the groups formed in the early 60âs, pre-Beatles, The Remaining Few started out as an instrumental band. They were called âThe Boysâ. As the 60âs progressed the band switched over to playing the British Invasion sounds. In San Angelo, the popular clubs were Princeâs Palace, The Twilight Zone, and The 13th Hour. For a couple years, The Remaining Few were the house band at the 13th Hour.
Ron Newdoll signed The Remaining Few to his Askell Records label, and in the summer of 1968, this two-sided psychedelic stunner was released. It was the last single released on Askell Records and few copies were pressed. While the single did not make the charts it did receive airplay in San Angelo and Odessa. It was the only single ever released by The Remaining Few, who broke up in 1970. The band at the time of these recordings consisted of Mike Jones-rhythm guitar, Joel Mulkey-vocals, Frosty McKee-bass, Larry Logan-keyboards, Rob Specht-lead guitar, and Charles Usery-drums.
Carrols Mood/The Sights and Sounds- A mystery group for the most part. One single was released on the A-OK record label (AOK-1026), âOut She Goesâ b/w âNo Oneâs Waiting For Meâ. For the bandâs second recording session they changed their name to The Sights and Sounds and recorded âWhat Youâre Doing To Meâ and another version of âOut She Goesâ. All four songs are included on this album, however the original version of âNo Oneâs Waiting For Meâ was titled âI Walk Aloneâ. These recordings were done in 1966. A later version of the band, with a different lead singer, recorded at Accurate Sound in San Angelo in 1967, cutting two original songs (âPlastic Peopleâ and âMystical Bellsâ) and two covers (âKind Of A Dragâ and âYou Keep Me Hanginâ Onâ). Ron Newdoll recalled them as being from Abilene.
