a biography
Tyler Hustonâs musical career began humbly in the mid â90âs. He began as an early teenager writing and crafting songs that uniquely spoke not only of life experiences but his deep faith. Even as a beginning songwriter, his style, song structure, and lyrical content reflected a maturity far beyond his years. Tylerâs musical influences include some of the more progressive artists in the music industry. Lesser known artists such as Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos, The Lost Dogs), Mike Roe (The 77âs), and Steve Hindalong (The Choir) are just of the few individuals that have played a small role in shaping the signature style that Tyler calls his own. Over the years his work has drawn comparisons to Ben Foldâs Five, Crowded House, Sunny Day Real Estate, Coldplay, and David Gray, to name a few. Thought provoking, insightful, challenging are just a few of the adjectives that could accurately describe the experience that is a Tyler Huston tune.
In the summer of 1998, KMG Records, a record company from Nashville, heard the track âJokerâs Wildeâ on a local Phoenix, AZ compilation record. They liked what they heard and scheduled an audition at Tylerâs home. Upon hearing a live performance of that song, as well as others, they signed Tylerâs band, The Straw Theory, to a record deal. In the winter of â98, recording of the bandâs debut album began. The record was finished by the summer of â99, and the band set out on tour in the fall of the same year. After a successful string of dates opening up for the Smalltown Poets, the buzz began to build regarding The Straw Theoryâs live show. A successful tour ended in the winter of â99. The Straw Theory had played all over the country to a wide variety of audiences, and left them all wanting more.
Sadly, at the beginning of the following year, Tyler and his band mates were beginning to have some differing opinions regarding issues concerning the band. After a time of prayer and seeking God, Tyler felt it best to bring the chapter of the Straw Theory to a close. It had been an experience that not only shaped him as a live performer, but helped to hone the sound and vision of his next musical project.
A while later, after a period of inspired songwriting, the preproduction on Tylerâs debut solo record began. Honing the songs that would eventually make up the album proved to be a stretching time for Tyler stylistically. He wanted to make a conscious effort to stay true to the musical personality that he had developed yet make a record that would reach a mass audience. The result was an album that was created over a 3-year period. Incorporating the talents of several of the musicians he has befriended over the years, âChasing Happyâ became the focused, decisive, consciously created record that he set out to make. Incorporating many different feels and moods, the record, âChasing Happyâ, has something for everyone.
Tyler Huston is no doubt a unique individual in the world of music. From social commentary to introspective thoughts of love and relationships, Tylerâs songs have touched it all. While he never sets out to please everyone, chances are youâll find something thatâs for you.
