Mr. Magic aka Awood Johnson (born in New Orleans, Louisiana), better known by his stage name Magic, is a New Orleans hip hop artist, who first worked the city's underground circuit, before signing with Master P's No Limit Records label thanks to the mogul's brother, C-Murder. Magic met C-Murder at a party and impressed him with his rapping ability. Mr. Magic was intended to become part of TRU, but Master P insisted that he instead rap on the parent label with a broader fan base. The relationship came to a bitter end after most of the other original No Limit artists had already left, and Magic has since spoken out bitterly against Master P and his business practices. Magic then became a member of "Body Head Bangerz", a rap group founded by Boxing champion: Roy Jones, Jr.
Magic proudly hails from the Ninth Ward of New Orleans and is often touted as "Mr. Ninth Ward." He popularized the initials "CTC", which stand for "cross-the-canal" or "Cut-Throat-City," referring to the Industrial Canal, which runs through the 9th Ward.
On July 24, 2006, it was announced that Magic had secured a deal with TVT Records, and was too release a new album, entitled "Before & After The Storm" in 2007. TVT Records was an independent US record label founded by Steve Gottlieb. Over the course of its 25 year history the label released some 25 Gold, Platinum and Multi-platinum releases. Its roster included Nine Inch Nails, Ja Rule, Lil Jon, Underworld, The KLF, Sevendust, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Pitbull. Its biggest commercial successes were the triple platinum Nine Inch Nails's Pretty Hate Machine, two double platinum releases by Lil Jon, and platinum releases by Snoop Dogg and the Eastside Boyz, Dashboard Confessional, Default and Ying Yang Twins.
From 2001 through 2006, TVT was recognized by Billboard magazine as the largest US independent label. It succeeded in releasing music across a range of genres with independent distribution.
