e a.k.a MR. COOL
Mention the name Mr. Cool, and it might not immediately grab your attention. A native of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica David âMr. Coolâ Clarke migrated to Canada in 1977 and has since made Toronto his home. His friends, as teenagers growing up gave the name to him because of his positive attitude towards life and the way he approached and dealt with day-to-day situations. He still uses the name as he had throughout hi professional career. David âMr. Coolâ Clarke started his career at the tender age of six, when he would accompany his mother to church. Singing in church gave him the confidence to turn his attention to the dancehall scene, and he has never looked back since.
This talented singer, performer, songwriter, and musician, appeared in many shows, which often took place in the city with out any financial reward. He would rather spend his time in the studio perfecting his craft, while learning the technical side of the music/recording industry.
Mr. Cool would admit that he loves to perform on stage. Although he has not made many stage appearances recently, he has worked on some of the major shows locally as well as in Jamaica. He performed at the Sting concert in Jamaica 1988 & 1992 and Regal Rock 1999 in St. Ann. He also worked the local stage venues here in town, where he received rave reviews.
Mr. Cool shared stages with ace DJ/singers like; Beres Hammond, Freddie McGregor, the late Dennis Brown, the late Garnett Silk, Sugar Minott, Rita Marley, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Capleton and a host of others in Canada, USA and Jamaica.
As a profiled writer himself, a few of Mr. Coolâs mentors are the late great Robert Nesta Marley, and Mr. Bob Andy. This, he explained âis basically because of the messages in their music.â Mr. Cool has no intentions of ever writing or performing a song that glorifies guns or drugs, and their related violence or being disrespectful to women or children. That is definitely not his style. He believes in cultural lyrics, love and unity among fellow artists. âMusic,â he said, âspeaks an international language and if some of the other artistes bear that in mind, they would not have recorded some of the songs they did.â
He is now hoping that his CD/LP will make his presence felt on the entertainment scene and among music lovers all over. I firmly believe that Mr. Cool will certainly rank among Reggaeâs Greats.
