Since earning his bachelorâs degree in music performance from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1990, guitarist Marcus Gerakos has enjoyed an eclectic and busy career in music, from his recordings and live concerts with Grammy-winning percussionist Alex Acuna to his recordings with internationally-known reggae artist Avion Blackmon to performances with Grammy-winning saxophone legend Justo Almario and platinum-selling smooth-jazz pioneer John Klemmer. He has performed in the near and far corners of the world, from Canada and Mexico to Central America and Thailand. He is recognized by many of his well-known musical peers as one of the finest guitarists in the business. He has arranged and performed some of the classical guitarâs most demanding literature, including selections from the 24 Caprices for Solo Violin by Nicolo Paganini, as well as popular songs treated with intricate counterpoint and harmonies reminiscent of pianist Bill Evans. He has recorded in a variety of settings, including TV and radio projects and has a long list of CD credits as a session player. He has lent his talents as a producer to projects ranging in style from Brazilian electronica to alternative rock to hip hop, and he has performed and recorded with some of the finest musicians on the planet. He also earned critical praise as a solo artist, recording two albums and garnering international airplay and rave reviews as leader and composer of his Latin jazz group, Escenas.


"Marmelade Skies" is my tribute to the heroes of my formative years, and the synthesis of my eclectic musical travels around the world. It's a tribute to the lasting power of great melodies and inventive arrangements, and to the Fab Four's fearless explorations into uncharted musical territories. They showed us all how great records are made. And this record, "Marmelade Skies", is my own personal thank-you letter to the creators of these timeless classics. My own magical mystery tour, if you will. I hope you like it.
Many thanks to a fantastic engineer and musician, my good friend Tony Shogren, for capturing all these sounds so beautifully, and for contributing his world-class drumming and percussive skills, not to mention his knowledge and insight into musical cultures. And to the first-rate musicians who took such great care with this music--flutist Artie Webb, bassist Larry Steen, and keyboardists Francisco Loyo and Andrae Alexander. I'm grateful to all of you for making this happen.
