Details:
First, let me tell you about this album "Mark Chiriboga". The first track is instrumental smooth jazz with a classical nylon string guitar lead (a beautiful instrument made of Brazilian Rosewood and cedar top.) It goes from a major to a minor mode with dimented chords and strong horn parts. Its pleasant to listen to, no Vocals. Track 2, a vocal song is "I Must Be Dreaming". This song was really written for my wife for our 20th anniversary, but as any song has other and varied influences. I won't say what guitar I use for the lead parts as I think I will make that a contest. Please find me on Facebook, MySpace etc and sign up for emails to win things like a guitar if you guess what guitar I play on that song! Should be fun. One of my biggest challenges is categorizing my music. This song sounds Jazzy, country Bluesy to me. How's that for a category. Track 3, Best of Both Worlds, is a fun vocal song I really like. Again, has a country, bluesy, 1950's sound to me. Kind of weird, but to me it really works, is fun to play and has great lyrics. Track 4: This was going to be the album title. I do really like the song. Its a great message "I'm gonna live while I'm alive." Smooth beachy tones to modern white reggea in genre to me. A fun, positive, party song with deph and meaning. Written on my 1930's Gibson Arch top rebuilt by Abe Rivera in 1979. Other tracks on this album inspired by this guitar, and the guitar was used on several tracks. She's a real beauty. You can find a video of me playing the guitar on YouTube. Track 5 is SoulFood. Thats what it is, but I guess I can talk a little more about it...LOL. I call this Swamp music! Just get down dirty, feel it and love it's funky fun. Mean slide guitar achieved on my 1969 Epiphone Casino (bad mother, one of my favorites - walnut thin hollow body archtop with old PAF humbukers to die for.) I used a strat ( with a raw wenge neck on it ) for some of the slide. See if you can hear the difference! Some vocals, but really just silliness and fun. Track 6 is BeachSide Girl. Now it starts to get a little jazzy again. No real vocals, but some fun distorted vocal parts funk it up. I love the Guitar parts on this. Its a fun "lick" as we call it. Track 7 is a turn from the rest. A seriously reggea tune, but with some nice jazz chords and changes it is quite tastefully written. A very meaningful and beautiful song. Unless you hate reggea, you will really like this song. Used the Epiphone Casino for the lead guitar achieving a really great tone (I think I was playing through a Mesa Boogie Maveric 4 x10. Oh, and yesI use 11 or 12 guage flat wounds on the epiphone and most of my jazz guitars. 10's on the strats and stuff.) Track 8 goes straight ahead Jazz and seems to be several peoples favorite so far (I'm writting this prior to release.) Really fun Jazz Guitar song. Track 9. Jazz Guitar, playing my Ibanez GB-10 here (and on BeachSide Girl). A bit more seductive then track 8 and some interesting guitar work. Track 10 is What Words Can't Say. Well this was the last song written. It was written for our 21st wedding anniversary. It is a beautiful Instrumental Jazz piece with my gorgeous Heritage Archtop sings the melody. I hear the words. Well, thats it for the album. I wanted to explain that stuff so you'd get an idea of what the album, and I guess, what I am like. I love music and guitars. I was going to call the album "You don't have to be just one thing" at the suggestion of my friend Frank as he listened and I explained the variety of music to him. I guess I was trying to justify it. You see, in the music industry, it is much easier to categorize an artist for marketing purposes if they stay in one genre of music. I just couldn't do that to you. I feel like it would be lying. You see, I really set out to be honest with you. To reveal myself, to know myself better. I love music, real music, not music made to sell and make money. I think true art is made for arts sake alone. For an artist, the temptations of commercialism can lead to less than true art I believe. Still, I believe art should be attractive, pleasing to the palate and leave one elevated and informed, happier and more prepared for and to love. So there is a balance. Commercial is not bad, it is what the majority like. Still, no one knows what they like until they really experience it for themselves. I strive to allow what is delivered to me to flow purely to you. The songs are lovingly, laboriously, translated by me from what I become when I am touched by Grace. . To really know me, listen to my music. Music is my form of communication...What Words Can't Say! (Thats the name of the 10th track on the album.) I've been playing guitar since I was 8 years old. Thats when my parents finally broke down and got me one after I had harrassed them about it for two years. Since then, I haven't put it down. My brother and I would play for hours after school with two guitars plugged into our Univox amplifier...what fun! In High School, after seeing Jethro Tull, I began learning the flute. I joined concert band, marching band, jazz band, and on the weekends, played dances in the gym or parties with my rock band. Went away to college and studied music, was Terry the Hippie in Caddyshack, Warner Brothers - lots of fun. Also, see me in The Making of CaddyShack the Documentary by Pangolin Pictures. A couple other little movies - 8 weeks in Antigua shooting "The Island" (staring Michael Caine), Bilboard Magazine feature with Coconuts recording Studio in Miami, TV shows, a llittle radio play with Gumbo Limbo playing Reggea all over Florida...lots of fun. Most important, I play music because I love it. I write because I must. I am inspired by this awesome creation, God, my family, my wife, my children and life. At this point, I have something to share, you will like it. It is grown from love and it is good for you. Please enjoy this music and may it bring you closer to yourself.
