Details:
Ryan Gilbert is a topical and political Anti-Folk singer born in Arlington, Texas in 1982. As a child he never lived in one place for very long. He studied Anthropology at the University of North Texas, and in the summer of 2004 he spent two months living in a tent on an archaeological dig in San Patricio. Throughout high school he played guitar and wrote songs for political punk bands. Picking up his father's acoustic guitar intending to learn a song played to him in early childhood, he opened a door to Joe Hill, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Ramblinâ Jack Elliot, Bob Dylan, Lach, and Joie Blaney. This was the beginning. For a time, he was played on KVRX in Austin, Texas. Since then he has made a pilgrimage to the streets of New York City on several occasions, playing at the famous Anti-Folk headquarters, Sidewalk Café, as well as Mickeyâs Blue Room and The Back Fence. In early 2004 he drove to Mexico and wrote "The Ballad of Johnny Gringo", about Mexican/Texan border prejudices. He has also played Goodyâs Jazz Bar and The Cooperage in Plymouth, England, where he met some old blues hands and wrote âThe Lonesome Rape of Alice Cohenâ, a true story about the rape of a close friend. He taught English for two years in South Korea and plans to return in 2012. He currently resides in Shanghai, China, while his wife studies International Relations. His first album, âCollege Radio Never Sounded So Deadâ, is currently available here after Yeni Park discovered the last remaining copy at Recycled Books in Denton, Texas. These rare and timeless tracks are only available in digital format due to the scarce number of hard copies in existence.. The album was recorded at the height of the Bush Administration in a trailer home by, Shelby Jenkins. "Black Velvet" and "Fly Now, Pay Later" feature vocals by fellow singer/songwriter, Sabra Lauren Laval. "Fly Now, Pay Later" also features keyboard and vocals by all around artist and musician, Delphi Colquhoun. Ryan is always writing, and is now preparing to at last release his second album from 2006/2007, a concept E.P., and a brand new third album for 2012.
***The final track "Fly Now, Pay Later was originally a bonus track, that was later split from Pierre in Robes (the tale of a highwayman during the French Revolution). There is a slight pause in the music towards the end of the bonus track which occurred on later versions of the album due to age. This brief pause appears on the version featured on this website.
