Details:
'the beginning' was made by David Burchfield and the Jubilation Shakers, a collaboration of several accomplished Kansas City artists. David had been living in Guatemala for a while, getting his heart broken by love and life, and then being pieced back together by just the same. He wrote some songs about it. He hadnât been back in the country long when he realized that the time had finally come to record his first real album. Heâd been playing around town for years, writing since the age of twelve, and getting his heart broken since long before then. It seemed like it was time to do things right and tell the stories with an album.

He gathered up his friends, rehearsed, and started in. Recording began in February at the Impossible Box in midtown Kansas City, Missouri with producer Mike Crawford (Builder, producer of Oriole Postâs âSilver City,â Sara Swensonâs âNever Left My Mind,â and various others). As the album took shape track by track, each member of the new band changed the songs in big ways. The songs grew far beyond the singer songwriter genre and became full band opuses to love and life â to losing your heart and finding it again. Jeff Larison (of the Blackbird Revue, John McKenna and the Blue Sea Fishermanâs Guild, and past Sara Swenson and Red Guitar fame) laid down some atmospheric pedal steel and some dirty delta dobro. Andy Michael (of the Wolf and the Medallion project, and regular Threehouse contributor) lent his accordion and very tasteful piano throughout. Seth Jenkins (of Oriole Post) stepped away from his usual mandolin and gave some creative and tasteful upright bass. Devon Russell earned herself the nickname âChoir of Angelsâ as she sang layer upon layer of harmony holiness. Leslie Hammer (of Run Little Rabbit) played fiddle, banjo, and viola, at times adding up to 32 tracks on top of one another in a single song.

The sounds the band found span genres and feelings seamlessly. One moment feels like an Alison Kraus-style alternative take on bluegrass, the next is altogether old-timey appalachian. Delta blues finger picking, twangless alternative country, and indie folk round things out. The album is a journey; one the listener cannot take without being changed.
