An Open Letter to Car Talk and The Tappet Brothers

Dear Tom and Ray, 08/03/06

the other night, what is left of my band, Tilting Windmills, was playing at the Grape Street Pub in Manayunk, a neighborhood in Philadelphia, when somebody in the packed house pointed out that all my songs are either about women or vehicles with internal combustion engines. I must admit he was correct. My wife, my sister and others have suggested that you folks might be interested and give one or more of the songs some airplay. I thought about it, figured what the hell, and set about this current mission.

Enclosed please find three copies of a beautifully handcrafted CD containing three internal combustion songs. One copy for Tom, one copy for Ray, and one copy for anybody around the studio who happens to want to listen to the songs after you've lost your copies.

A little biographical note:
I am 57 years old and, afflicted by young onset Parkinson's Disease, and have been forced into early retirement from a career in information technology. This was a mixed blessing. I found myself with time to practice while my diminished âmotorâ function made practicing songs about cars, trucks, amd even women more difficult. The material that I've been playing the longest and most frequently seems to have developed neural pathways which the Parkinsonâs is slow to eradicate. I also found a friend and able guitarist who was willing to learn my material and the race was on to see how much we could record before the tremors took over. Just call me Quaker David and Friends. As you can hear from the CDs we did manage to preserve some of this timeless art. I still play as often as possible, and with the right balance of modern pharmacology and exercise can still be semi presentable on stage. Unfortunately I have a body and face that were made for radio. So in the spirit of shameless commerce, and having already made a small fortune unfortunately much smaller by the purchase of various musical paraphernalia, I appeal to you gentlemen, and I use that term loosely, for some free air time in the hope that something may happen which helps me help my children pay off their student loans and allows my wife and I to continue to adapt our home of 26 years to be handicapped accessible.

Please let me know if you are going to play any of the songs on your program breaks with some lead time so I can get my kith and kin advance warning when to tune out the show!
