Modern vintage soul singer/songwriter/guitarist Zachary Ross just released his 2nd solo record, "On My Side". This latest effort features intimate, stripped down acoustic performances and features a handful of special guests. The record was produced by Jon Evans of Tori Amos fame. Zachary, having just completed another tour around the country this time as a solo artist is promoting the record with a string of Bay Area performances.
Zachary and his group of R&B all stars the Desolation Angels previously released, âFor the Love Iâm Forgettingâ. The groupâs sound, usually part horn-section funk / part âQuiet Stormâ ballad calls to mind some of the old-school soul artists of the 60âs but Rossâ lilting, smoke & honey voice and his non-standard approach to songwriting give things a twist that keeps his music fresh and classic all at the same time. Zacharyâs west coast tour has seen a host of a sold out shows during which the group has played with Chaka Khan, Blues Traveler, Aimee Mann, Sugar Ray, among others. The band has been joined on stage by members of Tower of Power, Ray Charlesâ band and the amazing Grammy-winning Tony Lindsay, lead vocalist with Santana. Zachary and the Angels are now looking forward to duplicating their recent success on the national level as the group prepares for more concert dates throughout the country.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Zachary developed his craft sitting in with older, more experienced players in seedy blues clubs, where he was invariably the youngest guy on stage. âSeeing the passion and soul that poured from those players, watching them connect with an audience in such an honest way was a huge motivation,â recalls Zachary. That listener connection is what hooked him for good, fueling his love of soul and gospel music and inspiring his almost folk approach to lyricism. His pure and sincere words string together an imagery filled recollection of his life. But as Zachary says, âthese are scenes that weâve all been through and my hope is that people get something of their own from the tunes.
