The Great NYC 90's Rock band often imitated but never equaled. Beatlesque, Badfinger and The Band are often used to describe the exciting music by songwriters Joachim and Appleton. The Classic Rock Opera was the last album of The Grasshoppers.
15 MP3 Songs
ROCK: 70's Rock, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
The Grasshoppers were one of the most influential and melodic rockinâ pop bands of the mid 90's. Their live shows were legendary and they could party with the best of them. Each member brought a unique musicability which was unsurpassed by their peers. Their legacy continues today. Their last album "Night At The Hoppera" this salvaged rock opera recently sold on Ebay for $100 dollars. Filled with songs about Midnight Callers, Blonde Bikers, Peeping Tom Boys, Magdelena Evercloud, Apocalyptic Whale chants and sonic blues riffs, Mystical Magic, and the power of love, all fine tuned into this dynamic pop rock collage. Now remastered âNight At The Hopperaâ is finally available with itâs one of a kind album art and offered here on CD Baby.
"American Van" their 2nd album will be re-released shortly and is a collectors item almost impossible to find. A concept album about a band with a remote controlled recording unit in their van. Songs recorded across America with a Beatlesque and The Band inspired twist.
Many luminaries of the business could be seen catching a show of the Hoppers from Paul McCartney, Joan Osborne and Jeff Buckley and even the classical conductor Seji Ozowa. At the Woodstock reunion in Bethel in 1994 The Grashoppers stunned the audience with an electrifying thunderously loud melodic performance. Special amplifiers were built and turned to the tilt. Sadly because of the rain, the footage was destroyed.
After playing together and separately for several years in groups such as Electric Jellyfish, The Stepbrothers, and The Dreyers Marco formed The Grasshoppers with Jason Appleton and David Hamburger in 1991. Subsequently, Jason Appleton, Marco Joachim, and David Hamburger penned the songs for their self-titled CD, released on Smile Records. The Grasshoppers rigorous touring schedule and original brand of '70s influenced rock earned them a devoted following and the attention of major record labels. They were one the first rock group to write and perform Jingles, penning such hits as Diet Coke, 7 Up, Toyota, Long John Silverâs, etc⦠and appearing in New York Magazine.
MARCO JOACHIM: LEAD VOCAL, GUITAR, PIANO. At 9 years old, while growing up in New York City, Marco met John Lennon and was inspired to become a musician and songwriter. Marco today enjoys a successful solo career and has opened for B. B. King and performed at the Kennedy Center as well as touring with a Woody Guthrie Multi-Media show called âAmerican Journeyâ. His recent album âChanging Timesâ has been compared to early Bob Dylan by Singout Magazine and is played on over 100 radio station across America. Marco is the cousin of folk legend Ramblin' Jack Elliot.
JASON APPLETON: LEAD VOCAL, GUITAR. Prior to the band's formation, Jason worked with producer Mike Thorne engineering acts such as Peter Murphy, Ashford & Simpson, and Betty while playing the New York City club scene. One can see JJ Appleton today as an accomplished solo performer and songwriter.
DAVID HAMBURGER: BASS, VOCALS. David, nicknamed "The White Owl" for his bass wisdom was a staple in the New York rock and funk scene for several years. David's bass playing has shades of Joco Pastorius, McCartney, and Rick Danko. It was David who penned the name of the group "The Grasshoppers". David also wrote several great songs for The Grasshoppers including "Come Back to Me Now" and co-wrote several songs with Marco. He recorded sessions with Johnny Sandlin for Capricorn Records and "Sample This" for Elektra Records. He has opened shows for Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Johnny Winter, Steel Pulse, and Etta James.
CHRIS WILFORD: DRUMS, PERCUSSION. Chris's drumming was a big part of The Grasshoppers music. Often compared to The Who's Keith Moon, Chris was a heavy Metal kind of drummer. Oddly his drum style matched perfectly with The Hoppers sound. After drumming with several bands around New York, Chis Wilford toured with Billy Idol's guitarist Steve Stevens. Between doing spot gigs with members of Blues Traveler, Chris spent a lot of time in pool halls as a professional pool player often taking his cue from the ghost of Minnesota Fats. Chris is now one of the top wine experts on the planet and plays occasional gigs.
