Details:
Started playing piano at 4, self-taught, my mother bought my ten year old sister a piano in hopes that she would learn it, instead, she was not the least bit interested. I walked up to the piano and started banging on the keys, just like a four year old would do and was amazed at the sounds that it made. Everyday I would bang and play some two finger songs until my mother noticed that some of the keys I was playing were actually melodic. She watched me make up notes that sounded pleasing and decided I should be the one taking piano lessons. So at 5 years old, I started going to a music teacher. She would place the music in front of me and play the notes. Then she said, "OK, your turn", I would play them perfectly. How did I know? Blown away by my progress she suggested to my mother that I should be sent to a special school for gifted children. My mother at the time could not afford to do that, since we were not rich. So instead, I practiced everyday by myself, taught myself to listen to a song and then play it. That worked for ten years, then while in high school,I had an chance to play with a band called, "Project Soul", which later on
became "Confunkshun". with Michael Cooper, Felton Pilate, etc. I didn't beleive they were serious enough with their music at the practice sessions to make it , so I left the group and started my own band. We went on to win "Battle of the Bands" in Fairfield, CA. After graduating from high school, I moved to Richmond, CA and started going to all the jazz clubs in SF., HalfNote, PlayPen, Kimbal's East, Fillmore West, checking out cats like Miles Davis, Stanley Turrentine, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, whom I saw playing in Golden Gate Park, on a flat bed trailer with Noel Redding, and his other member. That was the most enlightening experience I ever had. To see Jimi playing that guitar every way it could be played just too much. From then on, I knew that one day I was going be known for my music. So here I am, working on my fifth CD.
My home studio is fully equipped with M-Audio interfaces, pre-amps, Protools, synths, over sized stage speakers and a total library of instruments on CD, sound bites, effects, virtual orchestras and the like. I can create or re-create any sound I need to complete my tracks. I'm always experimenting with different combinations of instruments to come up with something unique sounding. Listen to "Peasant" on the album "Island of Dreams" for example. That main instrument is a combination of keyboard, flute and piccolo. I just started practicing with the standup bass and fell in love with the rich, deep sound it makes. Got to do something with that.
This CD is all over the chart as far as genre goes, actually it is a small representation of the styles I like and are willing to do. I will hone in on just one style on my next release.
My latest, "Funkamatic" is now available at:
