Friends of Man is the music and creative force of writer/producer Dean Ranel.
The idea and concept comes from a golden age of music and myth. The music draws upon influences of modal rock, mod beat, psychedelic pop, garage punk, blues, ambient and classical music. Often the lyrical content evokes images of an ancient world, love and the search for hope, the journey home to the stars or surreal tales of love or modern day themes based on symbolism and satire.
Friends of Man began in 2003 after the release of Friends of Man, Songs for Humans.
Songs for humans was recorded and performed by Dean in a secluded tropical beach resort cabin in North Queensland and was independently released through Anvil Lane/MGM. It was received with praise from press and peers as being an album that took some great musical gestures from the seventies and created a sound entirely fresh an new.
In 2004 Dean created the live band and baseing it in Sydney Australia. Featuring Lloyd G on drums, Niko Nikolas on guitar, Pauly P on bass/vocals and Dean Ranel on vocals/guitar/keys, the live band is a raw, sweet and powerful representation of Ranels music in full force.
In early 2005 Dean ventured off to the southern beaches of Sydney and recorded the EP It's the Way and produced/directed its accompanying video clip. Both have enjoyed national airplay on ABC RAGE, JJJ and FBI Sydney (band of the month â May 2006).
During the wintertime of 2005 Dean presented a series of shows called 'Friends of the Family. Friends of the family became a resident monthly event in Sydney with Friends of Man packing out crowds in small pubs. In the last year (2006) the band has performed as headliner and support in all of Sydneyâs major venues and pubs. Friends of Man charted in Spain with Itâs the way reaching no 2 on Spanish Radio OCI in June 2006.
