Gondwana is the second album to morph from the mind of Fornequiem, the musical moniker of composer and recording artist, Steve Jones.
From a modern studio perched on the edge of Canadaâs northern wilderness, Steve finds the space and time to transpose his thoughts and moods into the evolutionary electronic music that is Fornequiemâs trademark. Each track on Gondwana is an individual story of metamorphosis - yet the album as a whole, much like Fornequiemâs first album, Anarchy, is a work that is greater than the sum of its parts.
During his formative years, Steveâs musical heroes included experimental and electronic musical geniuses like Jean Michel Jarre, Peter Gabriel, Vangelis, Pink Floyd and Kate Bush, to name a few. In their creations, he heard music and sound stretched to the limits of possibility. Bands like Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Faithless and Banco de Gaia are continuing to use technology to break the old sound barriers, showing that the limits on what we can do to create music are dissolving like the night dissolves in the wake of a rising sun. These are the influences that have inspired and urged the spirit of Fornequiem on.
âI get a piece of music come into my head, usually in the middle of the night⦠often the core, or 'voice' of the piece. Over time, I iron it out, adding elements and layers, until I hear exactly what it was originally meant to be. It's almost as if it is already there, waiting to be extracted from the ether.â
Post production work on the album was carried out by Joao Carvalho Mastering in Toronto. Joao and his team delivered a level of finesse to the album that would be hard to exceed.
Vancouver artist Carylann Loeppky came up with the visuals for Fornequiemâs latest album. Her lingering imagery completes the artistic expression that is Gondwana.
